We ordered the sahara 400 bell tent from obelink. The delivery was very fast, we ordered Sunday and it arrived Friday. They sent us emails and a tracking number to keep track of it. We set off on Saturday morning for an overnight camp.

We got it pitched very easily. For such a large tent it was easy to do. One person could put up this tent.

We had a quick inspection of the tent. There was one part where the stitching was a bit off Some of the main tent has been caught into the seam but I fixed it by ripping that out and then sewing the seam secure. Easily fixed. The canvas is a nice creamy colour not bright white or anything. There were no other issues with the quality.

We laid out the ground sheet and stuck pegs in to get the shape. Then we laid the main tent over and lined the rubber pegs up with the ground sheet. We then pegged down outside and unpegged the ground sheet. Then the big middle pole went in followed by the a-frame pole. After that all that remained to do was to peg out and tighten the guy lines. Then inside we tucked the mud flap under the ground sheet.

Inside it's a great big space much larger than it looks from outside. Plenty of room to stand up which is a new thing for me in a tent. We had two thermarests at the back of the tent. Our table and two fold up chairs went by the central pole. There was plenty room around the sides to put cooking stuff and food bags. I love the open plan nature of the tent as it makes you feel like you have lots of space. This may not be for people who prefer their tent to be separated out though.

Our tent has a ring on the main pole so that you can hang things up which is really handy. There are four small windows around the side wall, these have bug screens. The tent has ties so that you can put the walls up in good weather. Also it has little eyelets so that you can attach an inner all around the back. We were led to believe that only the more expensive bell tents would have these features so it was great to see we have them.

Overnight it was very warm and cosy in the tent. I would say we'll need to rig up mozzie/midge nets over the bed as bugs get in to this tent by the door.

It rained in the morning and there were no leaks, the rain beaded up and it shed the water really well. It does take a bit longer to dry than a nylon tent. If you are getting a tent like this you should take into account how you will dry it out when you get back after a trip. We have a balcony bit on the stairs we can hang it over.

It's a lovely tent and I look forward to many trips hanging out in it.

ORDERING: Flawless. Ordered from Obelink in Holland. All in dutch of course but Google is your friend for translation and it is easy to figure out what info is required and when. Plenty of email to keep the buyer up to date with order’s status. Tent delivered in 5 working days.

QUALITY: The tents quality is OK but not amazing. The seams/stitching all seem good. On our tent the beige mudguards had some dark stains visibly created by the rubber bands at the peg points. This is strange since said band are also beige in colour. It’s purely a cosmetic defect and since the mudguards tend to be either rolled up or tucked under the ground sheet it is no great deal. More of a problem: a couple of very small “nicks” in the canvas. Not really visible from outside, we only saw them from the inside as the sun was shining on them. Poured some water on them, then there were submitted to a few showers overnight and there were no leaks. Overall they were defo no issues with waterproofing of the canvas. All in all, if we’d bought it direct from a shop we might have considered bringing ot back, but because it was from the internet we decided it was not worth the hassle of posting it back (something we have done in the past.) and wait for a new one. Especially as it was fairly cheap.You get what you pay for etc.

A quick word on canvas weight: we really weren’t sure about canvas weight (285g/m2) so initially wanted one with heavier canvas (320g/m2). But availability (or lack of) meant we had to buy the lighter one, and in the end as we’re not winter campers, we think it is more than adequate.

PITCHING-UP: For our first use, I was meeting my wife at the campsite from work and was supposed to set the ten up them as my wife did feel up to it. However, when I turned up , the ten was already perfectly set up. My wife was helped by a friend and she said it was not difficult at all. Just following the instructions that can easily be found on the internet.(ours were in dutch.). Putting the ten away was also a breeze.No issues getting it back in the canvas bag provided.

The only issue we had was tucking the mudflaps under the ground sheet as described on the manufacturer's website and on many other websites. We found that because of the gorund sheet pegs, it was impossible to do neatly. And the flap would slowly but surley silde back out anyway. On our next trip we will likely un page the ground sheet once it weighed down bour stuff. This should make easy to tuck the flap under.

SIZE: We use our 4m bell tent as sleeping quarters in complement to our camper van. With that sort of use, it is plenty big enough to sleep 2 adults on a double air mattress, as well as 2 children and all the associated bags.

If people also intend to cook/sit at a table in it, then I would say it is only suitable for 2 adults, maybe with one toddler at a squeeze. Head room is good in the middle.Obviously not so great at the sides.But people buying these tents will have figured this out.

With the very accurate method of using my own steps, I measured the total diameter of the tent, with guy ropes) at about 6.5/7m. Bear that in mind for pitch size.

COMFORT: We did not buy any inner tents so the tent did feel a bit colder than some other tents at night, but nothing an extra blanket won’t solve. Not worth putting an inner tent and loose the spaciousness in our view. With no SIG either, putting the sides up during the hottest part of the day was also great and something all of our friends envied us. As said, no SIG for us and we did not feel any drafts despite this and the mudflap issue described above.

IN THE END: We’re really pleased with our choice of a bell tent, perfect to complement our camper, and satisfied with our choice of supplier/model. Quality can be improved but we did buy it at a bargain price.
