I bought one of these bell tents as a birthday present for my partner. On the whole it is an excellent tent!

-Pros-

Good quality tent, strong and durable materials

Much more stylish way of camping

Much more comfortable in the heat compared to typical tents (we took it to the south of France and it was so much better)

Space- we have a double air bed, a mountain of odds and ends and a big trunk of cooking stuff which all fit in fine with room to spare for sitting

There are lots of add ons to 'pimp' your tent such as the addition of compartments, woodburning stoves etc and if your ground sheet rips/tears with this version, you can simply replace it with a new one.

-Cons-

The weight- it is heavy

The guy ropes, you do need more space as without the guy ropes the shape (and sturdyness) of the tent is affected

The canvas stains easily- it's such a light colour and marks really show.

Erecting can be a challenge. It gets easier with practice, but getting things lined up and getting the tension right is sometimes tricky. I have watched my partner huff and puff over this on a few occasions!

You will need to invest in heavier duty pegs if you go somewhere rocky/windy in my opinion. All of our pegs bent in France, we found metal stakes better.

Fabulous. Much better than nylon. Only drawback is that it takes up a lot of room in the car but it is worth it.

Inside you can stand up and it is much lighter and airier than a nylon tent. It never gets sticky and hot inside.

It is easy to erect. I'm tiny and on my own but if I can manage it almost anyone can. You can glamp them up and make them look cosy and homely in a way you could never achieve in a nylon one. Drying them out is not a major problem provided you have some space to lay it out.

I love this tent. Bought my Soulpad 4000 lite in Sept 2009. Just managed one weekend before winter. But although the weather was wet and windy I was very comfortable and warm, even without inner bedroom. And the tent seems to resist the wind really well, due to its design, I'm a single camper but find this tent easy to manage alone, people look in amazement that I put up this enormous tent on my own and I'm no spring chicken!. This year I have used it five times so far, and have other trips planned, and love it more each time I use it. I recently bought the inner bedroom to extend the camping season. Although it halves the space there is still plenty of room even when I take a guest for the weekend.

All in all a brilliant tent.

Although not a soulpad (ours is from belltent.Co.Uk) it's the same tent made from same canvas with same poles etc. As the other reviews on this style of tent say, its great, cool in summer, warm in winter. Everyone loves it and ask where we got it how much etc.

We have the option of the inner and it does make for a cosier life but compromises room a little. Although saying that, the bedroom still accommodates my wife and I plus our 12 and 9 yo kids with room for clothes storage etc.

Everyone seems to moan a little about having to dry it due to wet canvas rotting in storage. Yes you do have to but thats canvas and a small price to pay for all the benefits over plastic. Sorry nylon tents. And although im yet to save the pennies to get a stove, there is no way you could put a stove in a nylon tent.

It has the romance of a teepee without the weight and length of the poles and actually far more usable space due to the vertical walls.

I see that new for this year both soulpad and belltent are offering a deluxe version with zip out ground sheet. This will offer the weatherproofing of the sewn in ground sheet (rain and ground water can force its way in under the mud flaps even if tucked in on sloping ground) with the ability to roll up the sides in hot weather. If I was buying today, this would be the version I would opt for.

The only other 'criticism' I have, is that the foot print needed is larger by another metre all round as you have to use the guy ropes and they really need to be running out from the tent somewhat to get the angle and tension just right.

If you can afford it, get the wooden 'character pack' too, having plastic runners and metal pegs on an otherwise gorgeous tent does detract. When I get round to it I am also going to get some ash poles made up so I can loose the metal completely and go fully 'organic' :)

This is a superb tent and wins top marks simply because it looks great, is spacious (comfy for 4 plus gear), and is quick to put up (15-20 minutes max)and looks great.

The detachable ground sheet has 2 advantages (in my mind)

1. It means that you can roll up the sides which can be useful on a very hot day

2. The detachable groundsheet - often when we go home the tent is dry but the groundsheet is not, so I am able to store the tent and just dry the groundsheet (no need to repitch until dry etc)That said, even if its all wet then repitching it at home takes no time .

In my view the tent is warm even with the detachable groundsheet, and the groundsheet links to the tent skirt via peg holes to keep it nice and tidy.

Overall a great tent that should last for ages if looked after - and a fair price without doubt.
