3 Reviews of the Sahara 4 Polycotton

By: Weetabixface  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2007   Rating:

Purchased tent in 2008 and used it a few times in various weather conditions. Tent has a large bedroom (2.4 x 3.2m) and porch at the front (1.75 x 3.3m) and storage at the rear. The tent is spacious enough for the 2 of us with enough gear for long breaks. I imagine it would get crowded with more occupants but would be ok for shorter trips.

Bedroom has pockets along both sides, useful for storage of 'phone/watch/torch whilst sleeping, and a removable divider that attaches to the outer with toggles. The central toggle is useful to hang a light. Bedroom also has doors at both ends and there is a small area for storage at the rear of the tent.

Outer tent has a good size porch with front and side doors, there is also a rear door. Poles and guys are provided that allow one of the doors to be supported as an awning. Outer also has 3 windows, 2 front and one rear, allowing good air circulation.

Pitching the tent is quite straightforward. The instructions that are attached to the inner of the tent bag are scant at best. The tent pitches inner first and so can get wet if you must pitch in the rain. The inner clips onto the steel poles and the outer is attached with numerous ties, some of which have velcro. Therfore it is possible to take the inner down first if you really need to - useful when striking camp in the rain as it offers an opportunity to dry/clean the groundsheet of the bedroom while keep the outer tent up. The first pitch will involve some addtional time to adjust the guys to their correct length. Once this has been done the tent should go up in ~20 mins with most things possible by one person - leaving your glamorous assitant free to ready the sleeping bags/make tea/open beer.

The round wire pegs that are provided are only really useful for pegging out the SIG of the bedroom and the porch groundsheet. We use deltas (yellow nylon) on all the guys. The tent packs into one large (~1 x 0.4m) bag that has a large opening at one end, helps when re-packing the tent, compression straps and a repair kit attached to the bottom of the tent bag.

We have survived winds and torrential rain with no adversities and in full sun the tent is cool.

I really like the tent and would certainly recommend it for someone looking for an easy to pitch 4 person polycotton.

When I bought this tent (May 2009) there was no review for it on here. I posted on this site regarding my 'Amazon find' (£147 incl. Postage). I see someone has subsequently bought one from there and posted a review.

I would not agree with the previous review in that it definitely takes two people to assemble; also in my opinion it sleeps 4 adult-size people comfortably.

It is of very good quality construction, the sheer weight of it attests to that! It has got multiple meshed windows so it is quite airy inside. It is held down by numerous groundsheet and guy-rope anchor points and it stands up well in wind. The instructions they give you are appalling. You have to work most of it out for yourself :-(

I give this tent 9 out of ten, only because it's not the easiest of tents to set up.

P.S. See my photos.

Coleman do not make this tent any more. Found a few on Amazon whilst researching Polycotton tents. Is very easy to pitch, requiring 1 tall person or 2 not so tall ! Bedroom area has SIG and can comfortably sleep 5. Has a divider which can be removed. Useful storage are at rear of sleeping area. Lots of windows make it good and light. Living area not huge but fine for us ( 2 adults 2 children) can fit storage cupboard and kitchen area. Easy to take down with a really generous bag. Stayed cool in very hot weather. Great tent very pleased.
