2 Reviews of the Homestead 52
By: Djgorey Reason: I own(ed) one Made in: 2005 Rating:
I bought my Homestead 52 to replace my initial, cheaper family tent that we got when we first started camping. I managed to get it second-hand, used once from a popular auction site for the princely sum of £23.86! I was specifically looking for Wild Country as I have a couple of smaller Wild Country tents and know they are good.
I absolutely love it! It is now (in 2024) an old tent so doesn't have a lot of the modern features that you'll find on a new tent, but what it has is strength and a feeling of being incredibly well made. It's like an old Volvo estate.
It has steel poles that give a feeling of solidity to it that is incredible - once pitched you get the impression that it isn't going anywhere, ever! This makes the pole bag heavy, but the package is split between three bags so is easy to set up and it means that you can leave the inner tents in the bag in the car whilst you set up the outer fly.
The tent does not have a sewn in groundsheet - you pitch the fly and then clip in the bedrooms, which have lovely heavy duty ground sheets. There are three rooms to clip in, two of which are bedrooms (sleeping 3 and 2 respectively) and then the third one provides the living space. My best mate is 6' 2 and he was able to stand up in the living area.
Because of this, getting it fully set up does take a little while - there's a lot of guy lines and pegging out points and things to connect and then you need to go round and adjust the tension, but once done you get that feeling of a really strong tent (and a sense that you earned the beer!)
There are plenty of doors (a door on each side and on the front) and zips and mesh panels. There's space to hang two organisers with lots of pockets for putting stuff.
With the awning up (poles are supplied), you have a lovely space.
It's not a massive tent in terms of proper usable space - the space it has is very comfortable - the bedrooms are easily big enough for two adults and two children and the living area is useful, but for a family of 4, I think this would be better suited to being a weekend tent. I'm looking for a bigger (Wild Country) one for week long trips. For a couple, it would probably cope with a week long trip. It's great if you are going out for the day and coming back in the evening - it's less good for spending wet days sitting in the tent.
All in all, I absolutely adore my Homestead 52. My one is the older model so is pale blue and cream and nobody else has a pale blue and cream tent!. It's a beast of a tent that gives the impression it will stand up to anything. For a weekend away with the children, it's great. It's not perfect (I don't think any tent is), but the things it does, it does incredibly well.
I'll take some pictures during my next trip and upload them. If anyone has any questions, please feel free to give me a shout.

The best feature of this tent is it's strength. It's very stable in high winds (compared to other tunnel poly tents I've seen nearby) and the aluminium poles are reassuringly strong.
It's not a particularly light tent though, and it does take up a fair bit of room in the 3 bags - although you can get away with using 2 bags if you don't bring the 3rd bedroom.
The tent is very easy to erect for it's size, but it does require 2 persons - 1 to hold the 3 poles, 1 to do the initial pegging out. Once the initial pegging is done on a couple of guy ropes, the poles can more or less fall into place easy enough. Then the tent is re-pegged out properly - there are lots of guy ropes.
Although the tent comes with 3 bedrooms, we have only ever used 2 - one of which is slightly larger than the other. Both bedrooms are big enough to contain a standard double inflatable bed (e.G. Coleman Comfort). In this way it's just about big enough inside for 2 adults and 2 kids. It would be extremely cramped if you wanted to sleep much more than that, as the 3rd bedroom eats into the living space, and also blocks the bedroom doors of the other 2 bedrooms a little. I would say the tent could cope OK though with 2 adults + 3 kids with the 3 sleeping in the bigger bedroom.
Drawbacks - there aren't many, and they are niggles rather than real problems :
The 3 pole system means it can be a difficult / impossible tent to get straight on uneven ground.
If you don't use the 3rd bedroom, there will be a large patch of grass inside the tent just outside the doors of the other 2 bedrooms for which you will have to buy another groundsheet to cover.
Inside the tent there's a fair bit of room, but the 'A' shape of the living area and the slope of the front wall means you'll need to be precise about what chairs and table you use. Hard enough to get 4 chairs to fit in, particularly if they have arms.
All in all, this is a great family tent - strong, comfortable, reasonably big inside, reasonably easy to erect. I'm pleased with our purchase, we've never had cause to regret it.

Manufacturer's Description
The Homestead 5 has been re-designed for 2007 incorporating some of the features if the Halo range for even greater versatility. A completely re-styled inner creates a 'home from home' feel and provides excellent space for storing kit.
Easily sleeping 5 in two bedroom, the new Homestead 52 has the capacity to sleep two more in the new living area. Taking it cue from the Halo tents; part of the porch area is now included in the inner tent, so features a sewn-in ground sheet and mesh doors. As well as providing more sleeping space and a cleaner living area, this design also reduces the chances of biting insects entering the tent.
The front porch area is retained as storage and the Homestead 52 keeps the same versatile doorways, allowing easy access from three sides with the ability to turn the front door in to an awning (poles supplied).
Ideal for family camping holidays, it's easy to pitch and carry and it won't take up all the spare space in your garage when it's not in use.
