10 Reviews of the Modulus X4

Just a tip for getting the middle pole in. The 'sleeves' where the poles fits into are made from velcro so can be opened up to allow the pole to slide in from the side, so open the sleeves then if you bend the middle of the pole downwards before inserting then it fits snugly, push the middle of the pole up after and tighten strap. Easy when you know how! Have used it 3-4 times with 2 young children in one room and Mum and Dad in the other. Agree with most of the gripes already stated.

Decided to take up camping after finding old tent in shed last year. I have only used this tent 2 times and must say it is excellent, there is so much space. (I put up both sections, but take down one sleeping area.
Took my wife camping for first time and she loved the tent. She found it like a home from home and she liked all the windows :)
I found this tent very easy to put up on my own and easy to take down and pack away.

Just back from a rather breezy weekend on Exmoor - some rain too. The tent was very comfortable, easy enough to put up once you ignore the minimalist instructions.
Took the weather well, no leaks or movement. Plenty of space for 2 + 2 collie dogs with only the fixed bedroom. Great design feature, that.
Could not get the interior pole into the slots, as others have said: it's just too long. Had trouble with the poles supporting the doors too, lots of strain when putting them up, split one of the poles (thank heaven for gaffer tape) and split another later in the weekend when closing the door zip.
The poles put a lot of lateral stress on the door zips. I cannot see how to avoid this as the design requires that these poles act as an arch to give rigidity, hence pulling the doors outwards.

We have just had our first weekend away in this tent - the first one we have owned. Like the other reviewers we found the instructions to be next to useless and after a couple of wrong turns only found the tent easier to put up when following our own instincts. We had taken the add on section with us but found that the living area plus one bedroom was plenty big enough for the two of us so will save the additional room for when camping with others.
The living space is huge and the height was really important to us as one of us has a dodgy leg and one a dodgy back so we can no longer camp in tents that we have to crawl in and out of. My partner is very tall and even for him there was plenty of height to stand and stretch in.
The tent took about 1hr 20 mins to put up the first time (don't laugh - we are novices!) but now that we know what we are doing we anticipate it being a lot quicker next time.
Two criticisms though - one is that the central pole in the roof of the living area just would not fit into its casings no matter how we pushed and tugged at it - this was the main reason for it taking us so long to erect the tent - it was just too long! In the end we cut about an inch off the end of the pole and it fit perfectly but was rather annoying to have to do this and not what you would expect.
Also in the bedroom there is no covering on the windows - only being the plastic window area and then the thin fabric inner - is this usual? We just found it to be too light as the lights from the toilet block were really bright - we ended up covering the windows with towels and I shall fit fabric panels next time as it would have been difficult to get to sleep. Strangely the living room area has extra panels that cover the windows to make it darker?
All in all this has changed our camping experience and was a pleasure to use - making for a very comfortable weekend. We cannot wait for our next camping trip and found the amount of space perfect for a couple of nights to a week away. The only thing we need to submit a full review is for it to rain next time (not that we are wishing for it!) as there was not rain at all on the last trip so cannot say anything about how waterproof it might be. Having said that the winds were exceptionally strong and the tent held up well to those.

I do actually like this tent although I guess as with others it does have its problems.
Firstly i'd love to know the reasoning behind the black and red guy ropes, as if stumbling around in the dark wasn't bad enough without not being able to see the guys, it's so simple just to have luminous guys of which now I have replaced all of mine.
Secondly as with everyone else the instructions, terrible, need I say any more.
Thirdly build quality, now the materials are of a good standard but what I have found is that the poles do not match the apex of the sleeves and with such a complicated design for a tent this should of been an important issue to resolve as it means that you can never quite pitch the tent evenly and sufficiently taut.
Fourthly the fact the there is not an option to buy a porch area, now I do not mind so much that the tent doesn't actually come with a built in porch area but being able to buy add ons is vital in making this tent a winner. I have seen other awnings that are universal but you still can't beat items that I are specifically designed for their purpose.
Fifth and final moan is that I and never seem to get the main ground sheet to lay taut and completely flat into the corners at the same time, maybe this is due to my pitching techniques, if anyone has a fool proof pitching guide or any other useful info on using this tent i'd love to hear it.
Now that I have and my moan I do really like this tent it has survived numerous heavy down pours and pretty strong and continuous battering from gales. We like to camp early so have been out in some terrible weather conditions, and to its merit have had only one split pole but no rips and tears, I would buy another.

We picked one of these up for under £150 for a 10-night holiday and a festival, and have been very impressed.
After reading Martyn B's review above, we put it up in the garden first and got the garden hose out to check for leaks/problems. Fortunately it was fine, as the festival was pretty much non-stop rain and very strong winds. The tent stood up well, but it was more of the same on our holiday on a cliff-top campsite in Yorkshire. Everybody's tents were flapping about. Some had broken poles, some got completely wrecked, but ours stood firm and we are looking forward to this year's trips in more sheltered locations.
My only minor criticisms/warnings would be as follows:
1. The instructions are next to worthless. It actually isn't that difficult once you know what you're doing though, and can be put up quite easily in around 30-40 minutes; just give it a couple of practice runs before you take it out camping, so you're up to speed.
2. The top pole in the central living area is a right pain to get in. I'm 5'10' and I can only just about get this little pole in place, with a lot of struggling, swearing and sweating. If you are shorter than me, then consider taking a little step or something to stand on or you simply won't be able to get the pole in.
3. Not really a criticism as such, but please note that there is no porch area to the tent. The door zips straight into the living area. After the first trip with the tent we found this was something that we missed, so we bought a Khyam Universal Sun Awning for about £50 that matches the tent very well and provides that extra bit of protection/privacy. I now just consider this an integral part of the tent, and can't imagine putting the tent up without the awning too. I would recommend this or something similar to anybody, as an addition to the Coleman Modulus. I've uploaded a photo of the tent with the awning on, to show how it looks with this in place.
All in all, I would thoroughly recommend the Coleman Modulus to anybody looking for a nice-sized tent for a great price. This is a hell of a tent for the money.

This is a wonder, after tent camping in a large family tent for years we decided to get a tent for weekends and we struck lucky with this one.
No real problems with putting it up. Took about an hour but this could be done a lot quicker if the weather raining, bedrooms are a very good size with plenty of pockets, living area has load's of headroom and even a tie for a lamp in the ceiling.
Had no problems with leaking, the idea of zipping off a bedroom is so clever.
Myself and family have camped for years and have never seen, used or bought such a good tent

Further to last post! We went to a local site, so that we could see what it performed like. The wife suggested that we go when there was the likelihood of rain, to check if it leaked or not. No chance I said, - fool. At three in the morning I was woken by water spraying from the entire dome area of the tent, there didn't seem to be any proofing at all in this area. So we put everything under a couple of picnic blankets and went back to sleep. We packed up that morning and went home. I phoned Yeomans as soon as I got through the front door, and they could not have been more helpful. A new tent has been ordered and will be with me next weekend. I hope that this time the new tent lives up to its waterproof rating (6000mm). I will let you know.

I have to agree with HelenaB, (no relation!) that the instructions are actually more confusing than helpful. We have just purchased one and thought it would be a good idea to put it up before getting to site. Go with your instincts, the blue pole goes in the blue sleeve etc. Further to half an hours discussion with a friend who seemed very confident with these tents, it was easy to erect. With this in mind the tent is impressive, both in its build quality and size. It is a four person tent, but then I have seen tents of the same size claiming to be six berth. Further posts to be sent when we have used it. Regards to all.

This is my first tent as an adult and I've found it quite simple to use - after the first, confused efforts!
The two bedroom areas are on the cosy side - with two camp beds in there there's no room left for anything else. It's great for two or three, cosy for 4. In retrospect I wish we'd gone for the X5 which is just slightly bigger - but having a reasonably small tent is important for us so this still wins.
The main living area of the tent seems really large - there's lots of headroom and windows plus the light interior colours mean that the tent always seems roomy and light. The downside of this light interior is that in the summer it gets light pretty early!
I managed to put the tent up by myself in an hour - with two of us it takes about half that time.
Having spent two days in the tent in the rain I can say it definitely didn't leak!
The only real downside to the tent are the instructions which are appalling. So it took us a while to figure out what was going on first time we put the tent up in the garden - but once we got past that it's fine.
In conclusion - neat, slim, cosy but large airy living area and it looks great!
