Forest campsite damaged by wild boar
|
Wild boar partially destroyed part of Bracelands Campsite in the Forest of Dean in December 2023, less than a year after new owners took on the business.
The campsite owner said: "As new operators of Bracelands we had been getting to know the site and area. We knew the wild boar were part of the landscape, just we did not realise they were so close."
The owner added "The boar found an entrance into the campsite as a fence was broken. We did not realise the fence was broken until it was too late, as the campsite is surround by trees and forest, and fences are not always visible."
The owners were quoted £15,000 for repairs by a contractor, while new fencing to keep the boar out is around £20,000.
Despite the setback, the team has been hard at work on repairs, and Spencer added that they've had "six nights without boar being able to get in........ hopefully we've done enough but you never know".
The Forest of Dean currently has the largest boar population in England. According to Forestry England's website: "Large areas of uprooted and disturbed soil are a common tell-tale sign of wild boar presence. With powerful neck muscles and a long snout which allow the animals to plough through the ground in search of food, they can turn over a large area in a very short space of time."
The site is open now and taking bookings
