What is MAXXRAXX?

The MAXXRAXX is a towbar mounted bike rack, although it does not actually sit on the towball, meaning you are able to still tow your caravan, trailer tent, boat etc. without the need to sacrifice taking the bikes too.

With most cycle carriers these problems would all be a nightmare but not so with the MAXXRAXX bike rack. It tilts, even when loaded, to allow full access to the rear hatch or boot of your vehicle.
Even with a 4x4, when the rack is tilted the rear door can be opened up to 60 degrees providing easy access for the shopping, kids and dogs.

With the MAXXRAXX cycle rack, not only are your bikes locked to our bike rack with a built-in security cable, the rack is also locked to the towbar.

No Damage

Cycle carriers mounted on the back or your car can easily lead to damage to either your car or your bike. The rack and bikes are resting on the car and it is almost impossible to prevent damage. Roof mounted racks keep the bike away from the car bodywork but are difficult to use and there is always the worry of slipping and damaging the car while struggling to lift the bike up or down from the roof.

The MAXXRAXX cycle carrier is designed to prevent any damage occurring to either the car or your bike. The top-beam is at the ideal height for loading your bike. A cradle for each bike ensures they are kept apart and the ratchet strap holds the bikes firmly to prevent any movement.

Tow and Carry

The MAXXRAXX cycle carrier gives you touring with flexibility and choice. The bike rack leaves your towball free allowing for you to carry your bikes and tow your caravan or trailer at the same time.

A Towing Height Extension is available to lift your bikes an additional 300mm to clear jockey wheel handles, gas bottles etc. If you use an AL-KO stabiliser they will supply your bike rack with a specific ALKO foot plate to ensure adequate clearance when turning.

Firm Hold

The MAXXRAXX bike rack uses a strong and simple ratchet system to hold the crossbar of each bike firmly on the cradles. The same system is used on lorries to hold large loads and is quick and easy to use while being extremely powerful. Not only can you load and unload your bikes in minutes, you can relax knowing that they are completely secure on the rack while you are driving.

Accessories

Wall Mount Bracket

The top beam from your MAXXRAXX bike rack slots into the tube of the Wall Mount Bracket.
The bracket can be fixed permanently to the wall of your garage or shed. The bikes are then held firmly in place with the ratchet strap and are secured by the padlocked, built-in steel cable.

Towing Height Extension

Lift your bikes another 300mm with the Towing Height Extension Kit in order to clear jockey wheel handles, gas bottles, etc. on your caravan's 'A' frame. It is supplied with a special, large padlock which locks the height extension to the upright (S-tube) of your MAXXRAXX bike rack.

Light Board Hanger

Provides a secure location to fix your light board (legally required if your rear lights or registration number plate are obscured).
The hanger fits conveniently onto the ratchet bracket on the Top Beam and allows any light board to be held securely by a simple screw adjustment.

X-Bar

The X-bar enables full suspension Y-frame or "step through" ladies bikes (without a cross bar) to be carried on the MAXXRAXX cycle carrier.

What did we think?

Upon arrival of the unit, we unpacked all the parts and we were surprised at how simple the design was, yet how solid looking the bars etc. were. A quick read through the installation instructions and a quick watch of the videos on the MAXXRAXX website and we were ready to go.

We had to remove the existing tow ball from the vehicle and add the MAXXRAXX plate behind the tow ball and refit this.  A very simply job requiring a couple of suitable spanners and completed in a matter of minutes.  Once the bracket plate was installed, we were ready to go with the installation of the rest, and all in all it took around 20 minutes to be up and ready to put the bikes on, once used to this I would suggest this time would be halved.

The unit is extremely strong and well made and inspired me with confidence to happily carry four bikes on the back of the campervan.  A great design feature of the MAXXRAXX is that you are able to remove a locking pin and the whole unit tilts back, complete with the bikes still attached, and this allows access to the boot / tailgate of the vehicle.  This alone sold the idea to me, as many times in the past I have packed the car only to need something from the back and so begins the task of taking all the bikes off again.  Not with the MAXXRAXX, remove pin, tilt, gain access to the boot, tilt back, pin in and away you go.

The carrying arm came with four holders for the bikes, and you can use as many or as few of these as you wish and they are removable when not in use ensuring they are not getting in the way.  If you carrying more than 2 bikes you are required to use the supplied straps for extra stability of the bikes. 

The unit comes complete with a security cable, so that once the bikes are loaded on, you can wrap the security cable around them and lock them up, this is ideal especially if you are planning on taking a break and leaving the car during the journey.  The MAXXRAXX also comes complete with all the padlocks in order to secure them.

Overall , a strong, durable and effective solution to carry bikes on the back of a car without the need to sacrifice the tow ball, meaning you are still able to tow the caravan / boat etc behind the car.  This will become an essential part of my kit now when taking the bikes away with me.
