Vario 5 Family Tunnel Tent
|
The UKCampsite.co.uk was asked to
put to the test the Vario 5 Canopy - Family Tunnel Tent that has two
independent sleeping compartments, (one for three and one for two people)
which have double mosquito net doors, that allow ventilation without letting in the insects.
Exterior is polyester with sealed seams, the inner tents are polycotton, the groundsheets are made from polyethylene. The tent has an overall weight of 29kg's and is 6.2 mtrs long with a maximum headroom of 2.1mtrs.
At the back of the living area there are two extra entrances, that provide
extra ventilation too. Two loose groundsheets are provided, one for the front part of the living area (patio) and one for the main part of the living area.
The structure is reinforced inside by two horizontal poles, that go from back to front, just above the windows. There are plenty of guying points.
And the poles are of a diameter of 12.7mm, which should be more than enough.

Vario 5 - Our Thoughts!
My first impression when I received the tent was that it was quite heavy,
but this was simply resolved by carrying the poles in their separate bag out of
the main tent carry bag, which resulted in taking up no more space when stored
or when traveling but made for easier handling. I decided to put this up on my
own, despite having hands available to help, which at first looked daunting due
to the sheer size of the tent when laid on the ground, but after a few moments
to work out what went where, I had threaded the poles through the sleeves and
inserted them into the guide rings and the tent had formed its shape within half
an hour from starting. I then needed to peg out which did not take long at
all, therefore making this a suitable tent to be put up quickly and easily by
just one person.
One fabulous design on the tent is the adjustable sockets that the tent poles
fit into along the edge of the tent, you simply loosen them slightly to insert
the end of the pole and once in you pull the strap tight and the tent takes
shape, this is a super idea as I have spent many an hour trying to force poles
into sockets on other dome tents that seem like they will simply not go in.
The two bedroom compartments are separate, one being 2 berth and the other 3
berth and these are fitted inside the tent once the outer is up, this is a great
feature as it helps to keep the sleeping compartments dry whilst putting up the tent. They also have colour-coded the bedroom
compartments so you can easily
identify which compartment goes where (see picture to left). Each bedroom
compartment has pockets inside them to put your loose change, car keys, mobile
etc adding extra security for those valuables during the night. I did
notice though the larger bedroom compartment could have done with a slightly
longer zip as when you tried to tie back the door it pulled the groundsheet up,
but once the airbeds and luggage were in there it seemed to stretch. As the tent is quick to get up, within half an hour you can have the tent up and be inside out of the rain. |
There are strengthening poles that run the length of the tent above
the windows and are adjustable so you can make them as rigid as
possible, this is handy to help keep the shape of the tent because at
6.2 mtrs long it can catch the wind and sway.
The main living area has six windows and air vents allowing maximum
light to be shed into the tent and giving great ventilation too. The
front section removed completely and can be situated in one of two
places, firstly (as per picture on the right) it can go on the end
creating a massive living space inside, secondly it can be located at
the first section, 1.2mtrs in, creating a porch area (as per picture
top left). The versatility of this tent is great and is a good size
5 berth tent with plenty of living space should the weather not treat
you kindly, I would recommend ensuring that all pegging points and guy
ropes are secure into the ground, as due to the sheer size of the unit
it does catch the wind and will blow a bit. The removable, separate
ground sheets are a great idea allowing you to camp at places that
only allow breathable ground sheets, just don't put them down. Overall
I think this tent is a real family winner, it will accommodate a
family of 5 no problem and give a family of 4 plenty of living space
to enjoy a long holiday together. This is a very easy to put up tent
and taking it down took no more than 20 minutes.
