New Season Checks for Caravans / Motorhomes

Bringing your caravan or motorhome out of hibernation after a long spell of disuse during winter, could result in some things not functioning properly. Recommissioning your van properly after any long period of unuse is important to ensure your safety and convenience!

Here we have listed a few basic checks to help get you back on the road, and to ensure your van won't let you down on your first trips of the new season. Why not print it out, and tick off each checkbox when you are getting your van ready.

Exterior Checks

Clean and polish all over

Polish windows with very soft cloth

Check all outside door locks are working

Oil main door hinges

Check all sealants and trims for splits or cracks

Inspect exterior locker seals, make sure they open, and test locks

Check grab handles on front and rear are secure

Damp test - use a meter if available

Inspect and clean 12n and 12s plugs

Gas Appliances

Inspect condition of gas hoses

Check gas bottles have gas in them

Check your water heater works on gas

Check the gas fire lights up

Make sure gas hob is lighting on all 4 burners

Check the gas oven lights

Check grill lights on gas

Check your fridge lights on gas

Refill gas hand lighter

Interior Checks

Check for signs of water ingress all over van

Check for mould spots all over van

Floor delamination - does it feel spongy?

Clean all small roof vents and check blinds

Check all window catches are ok and windows open.

Check glass tops not loose in galley

Clean large roof vent glass and surround and check blinds ok

Lubricate cupboard hinges and main door hinges

Open and check all blinds and fly screens

Open all cupboards and check stays and catches

Interior doors , lockers and hinges

Running Water Systems

Check all waste outlets are clear

Visual check all water pipes for frost damage

Clean out water system with Milton

Check or change water filters

Refit shower curtain if removed

Refit toilet cassette / olive and oil sealing rubber and blade

Check toilet flush and ensure blade opens

Refit shower head if removed

Check all taps and shower head flow

Test water pump works

Check all toilet fluids

Clean water barrels and filler pipe

Clean waste container.

Chassis and Running Gear

Check all tyre pressures, and condition. Don't forget the spare!

Check wheel nuts are tight.

Grease hitch head bar

Grease leg winders and check for full range

Grease jockey wheel leg

Check cables for wear and plugs not damaged

Ensure handbrake operates on and off

Check wheel brakes are not seized and check condition of pads

Check wear on alko hitch pads.

Ensure overrun piston works

Check condition of breakaway cable

Test motor mover is working if fitted

Fit new battery in the remote for the motor mover

Make sure you have all tools you normally require for the season.

Electrical Systems

Check all interior lights 12v +240volts are working

Use a volt meter to check main battery is at 12.7 volts

Whilst on charge, check voltage is 13.5v - 14volts

Check your water heater comes on when on 240v

Check electric fire on all settings and make sure fire fan is working

Check fridge works on electric 12v and 240v

Check you have spare fuses and bulbs

Check awning light(s)

Check the clock battery!

Smoke alarm batteries and test it works.

Carbon monoxide batteries and test it works

Test all 240volts sockets with tester 

Check brake  lights if car nearby

Check all side lights

Check indicator lights.

Check fog lights

Check number plate light
