I used to love a cup of coffee but over the last few years I just can't find a coffee that actually tastes like coffee any more. I don't know if it is just my taste buds that have changed but it all tastes like the scrapings off the coffee room floor!
Perculated coffee might be better but it takes a little while to make and is wasteful just for a couple of cups so I would prefer instant.
I did buy a cheap columbian coffee from Tesco a few weeks back which I thought was not too bad but as always when I find something I like Tesco seem to stop selling it!
What brand of instant coffee do you find the best?

If you have a LIDL close by, you could try some of their Coffe Pads (not decaff)
These are like tea bags but with coffee. I find them very useful as I hate using the percolator just for myself :)
They cost about the same as LIDL Gold Decaff, which is also tasty.
I find it hard to find a nice decaff coffee for more regular use. Most of them have no flavour or fragrance.

There is a Lidl not far away so I will take a look, Aderynglas...thanks. I also find decaff even worse.

Not being a coffee snob, I love my instant. I love Nescafe Gold Blend. I can't drink 'propper' coffee, tastes too bitter for me

Aldi for me. Either their Gold blend equivalent or they sometimes do versions of Alta rica, Columbian etc. Much cheaper than named brands.

Douwe Egberts if you don't mind the price, often on special offer in Tesco though. Otherwise, agree about the Aldi stuff, its ok for a cheap price, much better than cheap brands in Tesco.

For instant coffee I quite like Carte Noire. Every now and again Tesco and Aldi will have it on a half price offer, we just stock up and do the same next time the offer is on.
Never paid full price for it.
I also bought a one/two cup cafitiere a few years ago which is ideal and I can choose my coffee,I also take it camping /caravanning.

Ive had lidl pods but I find them a bit bitter, our favourite is Taylors lazy sunday, I always put a extra sugar in coffee as I find all coffee is a bit bitter, you can get a excellent coffee maker from Currys for £19-99 that you can make 1 cup or 10

Hi Bob, I love my cafitiere coffee and bought one of these for camping. Then bought them for the house. They are easy to use and great for one cup instead of making a full cafitiere of coffee. I tend to use Taylors coffee (strength 4) or lavazzo (sp?).

I too use a tassimo in the house but in work we try and get something around £3-4 for a small jar and I have found I like carte noir more than the rest of the ones I we have tried.

i cant drink any instant - i found it was giving me an awful taste in the mouth, and headaches.
i wont even let the stuff in the house.
has to be fresh only here.....we get all the varieties from Costco. Its about a quarter of the cost of the supermarkets, if not even better than that when there is a offer on.
i never understood instant as it no more effort to make a fresh pot than instant!

We bought some Millicano in sachets from Tesco, half price. Lovely coffee, not bitter and lots of taste. We regularly change as we find you tend to get used to the taste and it becomes a bit tasteless. We also like Douwe Egberts (in glass jar), Carte Noire and Lidls de-caff. All nice flavours.

I don't like fresh coffee, I find it very bitter. I drink it black and some coffee you get in restaurants is like mud.
I buy Asda's or Tesco's own and can't tell the difference between that an Nescafe and it's half the price. I can't tell the difference between caffeinated and decaf either.

Coffeeholic here! I don't like instant, I make my coffee at home from beans in a drip filter coffeemaker.
When I am camping or boating I tend to use ready ground coffee with a filter cone on top of an enamel jug, dripping the water through with the kettle. It takes a few minutes but it is worth it for a decent cuppa, why rush on holiday!
Another way I make coffee "in the field" is with Lyons coffee bags. They make a reasonable drink, certainly better than instant if not quite as good as the bean to cup method.

Can't stand instant and would rather go without if there is no Espresso available.
At home I use a Lidl Espresso machine £40 a couple of years back, it took me a while to find my perfect ground coffee, and since then only use Lavazza Qualita Rossa which I find perfect either Black or for Cappuccino.
It is so nice to gett that coffee shop taste at home for a fraction of the cost.
Usually buy the 250g packs at ASDA £2.50 when on offer.

Alta Rica ("The Intense One") for me too, at home and on camping trip, and I personally believe it is the best instant coffee on the market.
I usually have a spare in the cupboard at home, as I do not like to run out.
An alternative to Alta Rica is Kenco's Costa Rican, however, I would only buy that grudgingly.

Can't bear instant coffee, I'm afraid. I just don't think it tastes anything like coffee. At home and on camping trips I use an Aeropress (kind of like a hand-powered espresso machine). It's small, needs no electricity and makes wonderful coffee for 1-2 people.

Double cream in mine, and plenty of sugar, lush!
I like mine very strong, 2 heap teaspoonsful to a cup, with 4 of sugar, and at least a quarter is double cream!
I only have one cup a day in the morning to wake me up though. The rest of the day is usually Ribena or something alcoholic in the evening if I am having a full meal.

I don't use instant. Much prefer the ground coffee. We get ours from lidl and it goes straight in to the bottom of the cup, hot water and leave until the grounds have settled.

I remember the Camp, as a kid.
I seem to also remember that chicory cr*p coming in at a time when coffee prices were hitting the roof.
Nowadays, I think I'd rather pay 4x today's prices than go back to having that sh**e back in my coffee!!

Camp is still in the shops and much unchanged in my view. I still enjoy a cup occasionally and prefer it often to coffee.
I cannot be alone otherwise it wouldn't be in the shops. Same as the floor scrapings coffee. If it doesn't sell it wouldn't be in the shops. Some people must like it.
Personal Choices and preferences.

Hi Steve,
Does the Camp still have the chicory in, or has it gone back to it's original recipe?*
It was the chicory I was berating, not the camp itself. I seem to remember it got added to quite a few instant coffees back then, due to the excessively rising costs of proper coffee.
EDIT:
*Or.... is my mind playing tricks, and Camp always had chicory in it? I'm sure I'm right about chicory being added to other more traditional instants though... aren't I?

Ah! Maxwell House I do remember that but not the others.
To be honest we were not allowed coffee, maybe just an odd cup in our teens.
I had 3 jobs when I was 12 yrs old so had a few bob in my pocket, so when we went camping ( something you could do in those days as young boys) usually in a field about 100 yds from home.
We would pitch our centre pole massive ex-army tent and meths stove and bought a bottle of Camp coffee for us all. We felt like millionares and grown ups..lol :D

I always used to drink Nescafe original but then gradually realised it didn't seem to be tasting like coffee any more, hence the start of a search for a good coffee tasting coffee as I remember it - lol.
I have tried it stronger or weaker, more or less sugar, more or less milk and it still doesn't taste right.
As I mentioned earlier, I tried a jar of Fair Trade Columbian coffee which was pretty cheap from Tesco and it wasn't too bad at all, but Tesco have just stopped selling it.
The fact I bought a jar of Tesco coffee this week and it was foul prompted me to open this thread. The trouble is, so many different people like so many different coffees that I will have to go through the whole thread and see which one comes out top image: - http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/chatter/forum_images/smiley36.gif

2nd Nescafe Original
3rd Maxwell House ORIGINAL (Not the Brazilia blend)

Well, it would seem that Carte Noire is the clear winner with Alta Rica and Millicano joint second followed closely by Douwe Egberts, Lidl and Nescafe original in joint third place.
Various types of Kenco seem quite popular too.

If that stuff has ever been near a coffee bean then I'm a spaceman - it's vile! xx( A couple of years ago I went to Holkham beach in north Norfolk and at the end of the lane was a catering wagon - I got a coffee from there and wished I hadn't as it was that Camp stuff and absolutely disgusting. Even the dogs turned their noses up at it!
I normally only drink coffee when I'm out or round at friends as I prefer tea, but if I do have coffee at home then it's the Nescafe cappuccino sachets.

Don't drink instant anymore apart from occasionaly in caravan when it will be the long sachets of Milicano or Carte Noir. For Decaf Lidl's own one isn't too bad

Coffee is definitely a very personal thing - I'm not a fan of instant (have it at work - I have the decaff as the ordinary one provided is very bitter), and I don't like filter - I have a bean-to-cup machine at home (I know - extravegent, but we all use it and enjoy the coffee), and my favourite beans (white bag with green twin-tailed siren logo!!!). I bought a jar of Carte Noire today...special offer £2.00 at Sainsbury's. Certainly much better than Tesco's own brand but after two cups the jury is still out. I am not sure it is the taste I am looking for but at least it is drinkable.
I will probably try Alta Rica next time (can't afford Millicano) but I tend to think Columbian might be my taste so maybe Kenco or Lidl's unbranded - lol.
Maybe I'll mix the lot, add a drop of Camp, and come up with a completely new flavour image: - http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/chatter/forum_images/smiley36.gif

If you love coffee then could i suggest an espresso maker (a proper one). When you've got the hang of it, it will become your friend and will produce the very best coffee you can get. That's why all decent restaurants have them. That's why any coffee house worthy of the name have them. Good coffee wont be bitter.
We got a Gaggia classic about 18 months ago on the recommendation of a bloke who owns an Italian restaurant. My wife loves real coffee so we gave it a go. Its fantastic.

We have a Gaggia Classic too. In fact when the first gave up the ghost we bought another straight away. We don't have instant ever! Proper coffee is the way.
A Classic can be had for £180, sounds a lot but you recoup the outlay in two years when compared to a pod type machine if you make 4 cups a day.
Google Hart's of Stur, good service and decent prices.
Just had a look they haven't a classic in stock at the moment they have other Gaggia machines though.

I guess £180 is not so back if there are a few coffee drinkers in the home.

That might be part of the cause. I have never had a sinus infection but I do occasionally get blocked sinuses causing headaches. A snort of salt and bicarb solution usually clears them image: - http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/chatter/forum_images/smiley36.gif

Hmm , we paid over 200 for ours. The best price I could google at the moment is 215. Not cheap but definitely worth it if you love coffee. It uses the same pressured water technique as restaurant espresso makers and the coffee's just as good. The steamer takes a bit of practice to get just he right milk consistency.

Gaggia also onhttp://www.amazon.co.uk/Gaggia-Classic-RI8161-Machine-Professional/dp/B0000C72XS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1391525547&sr=8-1&keywords=gaggia+classicAmazon.
New machine have a fiddly plastic 'Krema' device which is ok but easily lost down the sink. You can get the older type basket which IMHO is better. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Gaggia-Stainless-Pressurised-Espresso-Machines/dp/B004ZER1TA/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1391525771&sr=8-2&keywords=gaggia+classicbasket

The Gaggia Classic is a nice enough machine, but not much use when you're camping. For that, you want one of these:

In fact, it's so good, you might find you end up using it at home too. When my last counter-top espresso machine died (pump failure) I didn't bother replacing it because the Aeropress is just so damn good.

Not being funny, but the Aeropress makes better coffee than any consumer-grade espresso machine. But don't take my word for it...

The review basically says the Gaggia is the best, provided you know what you're doing with the ingredients. That's the whole point of it. You get the mix right and the rewards are greater..... worth it if you're into coffee.
......but fair do's I do like the aeropress as an alternative. Weve got one at work.

In the end I mixed the Carte Noire with the Tesco Gold Blend and surprisingly came up with something drinkable...doesn't taste like coffee but drinkable image: - http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/chatter/forum_images/smiley36.gif

Err, no, it what he actually says is that cheap domestic machines like the Gaggia classic aren't worth it. There's a massive difference between a £200 counter top machine and pro gear.

He actually said the Gaggia is the nearest to coffee house - on the link below the video.
Obviously there's a difference but not many people will pay £500 plus for a machine.

IMO instant and fresh coffee are as different as tea and coffee, I like both. Fresh coffee comes from a local deli where they grind the beans for you. for instant I buy a brand called Percol which is delicious. I have been a staunch supporter of the Nestle boycott for years and would no more drink nescafe than I would my own urine.

I am not sure I know what the difference is, but I only have maybe 2 - 3 cups of coffee a day, if that, so making a big jug full of the stuff would be a little wasteful...and then you have to keep washing the machine or jugs or whatever.
When I was working we had Maxpax either from a vending machine or just in cardboard cups, not that I liked cardboard cups but I thought the coffee was pretty nice stuff.
...come to think of it the cardboard cups might have made all the difference image: - http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/chatter/forum_images/smiley36.gif

I agree - instant coffee has its merits, is fine in its own right, but it has a different taste and caffeine content to "real" coffee; usually one or the other fits the mood. We find in the MH, that filter coffee is best - just bag and bin the filter paper, much less messy than a plunger, uses minimal equipment. And at home I also use an individual filter that sits on the coffee mug, but you have to flush the grounds away, more messy, less convenient. With both of these, you can make the coffee stronger or weaker, which you can't with a pod. We choose strength 5 or 6 - espresso, even though we're adding a bit of milk. And Douwe Egberts instant or Gold Blend. Never ever Birds Mellow Blend, which is just brown water.

You can vary the strength with a tassimo. Just use the manual setting.

This ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
I only buy it when its on offer and stock up.

I buy the pouches of Kenco Azera, they're on offer in ASDA for £2 at the moment. Lovely cup of coffee, with a real percolator taste. If I've time to throw some stuff in the percolator, I've got Twinings but also love the fresh coffee from IKEA.
