We love our 2 year old Pennine Pathfinder. However there are a couple of design flaws. One of these is the small waste sink behind the main sink. Last year, we noticed that this was cracked. When looking at the problem, this was caused by the sliding wire basket under the sink. See the pictures below.
Rather than replace the sink and chuck away the useful wire basket, I have tried a different solution. The first step was to take off the sink drain and replace it with a connecting tube.
This is to connect to a 1 inch threaded connector with a hose connector attached.
I drilled a hole for the connector in a bit of plywood and screwed it over the hole where the sink was. I then replaced the sink hose with a slightly longer piece with the connector attached.
The new system is to screw in the hose connector on the pipe from the sink to the 1 inch brass connector which sits permantly on top of the kitchen base. I reckon that the first time I forget to do this and manage to drench the whole kitchen unit will be sufficient reminder to do it every time.
I managed to briefly test this before the rain came and it seemed water tight. Next opportunity to test in the field will be at the end of May.
If anyone has done anything similar, please let me know how it worked for you. And anyone who has a Pennine with these sinks, watch out for your wire basket underneath.
Hope this is useful for anyone who wants to attempt this.
I am a DIY idiot smartecosse so it must be possible for anyone to do it. Only took me three attempts to get the right length of hose from the sink. Luckily I knew that would happen and bought 3 meters of the stuff.
Using an external waste socket was one of the methods I thought of, but I couldn't figure out how to get a water tight seal. Good to hear that is an option though.
