Hi

We live in Denmark and want to buy a foldingcamper in England and take it back to Denmark. Can we tow it with our Danish car with Danish numberplates if the fodlingcamper has English numberplates?

I would have thought that you would need a UK numberplate, but someone else will.know better.

A Danish number plate, same as the tow vehicle, I would have thought.
You wouldn’t be able to get a UK number plate anyway, because you have to take the vehicle registration documents with you - otherwise anyone can buy any number plate.
(Our car number plate was “cloned”, so we got a parking fine from a city 4 hours away, but I had proof we were local on the day in question.)

Trailers are not registered in the UK, it just needs the same number plate as the tow vehicle.

Take the UK plate off and put yours on, simple.

Your main concern here is Danish law. Would this folding camper need to be registered in Denmark with its own number plate ? Would your car insurance allow you to tow a trailer that is not registered in Denmark ? Provided all that is ok in Danish law then as stated in previous post just bring a spare number plate for your car & you are good to go.

This is probably a question you have to ask the Danish Authorities. If you can get a duplicate number plate with your car registration you won't have any issues with the UK Police. Its really what happens when you cross the channel although I don't suppose the police in the countries you transit will be bothered either? If trailers have to be registered in Denmark don't forget you will probably need a Certificate of Conformity from the folding camper manufacturer.

Thank you very much for your answers.

The problem is not the Danish law. We have to register it and get it through MOT, but that should not be a problem. The Folding Camper will then get its own numberplate.
We can easily bring an extra numberplate, so if we can just put that on the folding camper, the problem of towing it in England is the fixed.
Next problem is getting it through Holland or France and Belgium, depending on the route we take.
So if anyone know how to transit Holland or France and Belgium, we would be happy to know.
After that we will find out how to get it through Germany, but I think we can get a temporary numberplate in Germany. We could get one in Denmark, but then we would have to go to Denmark end then back to Germany.

I’m not seeing a problem here. If you take the Hook of Holland to Harwich ferry route then you are driving from Denmark through Germany & Holland. Less than 8 hour drive from Danish border to Hook port. The fares on that ferry route is similar to the Dover Calais ferry routes so no need to drive further than you need.

When you collect camper from UK bring tools to enable you to properly fix your Danish plate to rear of camper so it looks ok. Nobody will question you when you arrive on ferry to Hook with the camper & with Danish plate properly fixed to rear of camper why would Dutch or German police have any reason to stop you. Speed limit with trailer on Dutch & German motorways is 90km I think so keep to that.

Billy

According to Danish Law the trailer has got to have its own numberplate, so it´s only if the police in Holland or Germany are board and know that this is the case. They probably wouldn´t notice, only if they are right behind us.
Again according to Danish Law, a trailer I am towing is insured by the cars insurance, but I don´t know if that is the case, when the trailer is unregistered. When you buy a temporary numberplate the insurance follows that numberplate.

I know I am thinking of the worst case scenario, but sometimes it´s nice to do things the right way ;-)

Ok try this then if you want to do it all legal & if seller is willing to tow camper to port then you will not even need to come to UK & this might be your cheapest solution.

The only direct ferry route nowadays UK to Denmark is DFDS Immingham to Esbjerg. This is freight only. They don’t take passengers with cars. However they would ship the camper as ro ro freight. So however you do it deliver camper to Immingham port & get it shipped direct to Denmark.

Having said that the route does take some accompanied freight ie trucks with their drivers so it is possible they might take you with your car & camper so worth a phone call to DFDS.

Are the number plates for trailer any different from number plates for cars in Denmark or is the only difference the registration number? Trailer registration is the norm in Europe but not in the UK. Continental police will have seen thousands of UK cars towing a caravan with the same number plates and unless you have caused some traffic offense the likelihood of being stopped is tiny.

Do you have to do anything about importing the trailer to Denmark, regarding VAT now that the UK is no longer in the EU?

David
