I personnally would not accept a cheque without it first clearing before handing over goods

Even then you're taking a risk.  Cheques can bounce a year after they've cleared!

(That's how many of the scammers work on ebay sellers.  They win auctions for things they couldn't care less about.  Mobile phones are common.  Then they pay with a cheque that's for more than the price - saying "don't worry, wait until it's cleared and then send me the phone and the change".

Then, after they've got the cash back they dissapear.  Later the cheque turns out to be stolen/forged and the bank reclaims the money it cleared into your account.)

A bank draft is safe, as this is drawn by the bank not the account holder and the bank will only give them the draft if they have the cash in their account.  A draft will have a hologram on it somewhere.

I've heard of people managing very convincing forgeries of bankers drafts though!

There is no way I would "do the deal" in a car park etc.

I am not suggesting for one moment that Maisey Mai or her buyer are anything but 100% honest but in my working life before retiring I had to deal with some incidents like this (in car parks) which DID go wrong.

Me too. I know when we wanted £3000 from the Abbey a little while ago we had to order it 4 days in advance, and then it was 20 questions as to why we wanted the money, the same when we paid it in, asking where it was from.

Do not accept a personal cheque and I personally wouldn't accept a bankers draft either, especially as you are not meeting them at their address. (I would take their registration number too if you do meet them so if there are any problems you may have some comeback)

Really pleased for you, people who pay by cheque these days are either scammers or totally innocent of what doe's go on these days. Glad it all turned out so well and that you took all the precautions not to get caught out as is so easy to do.

Ray.

glad it all worked out for you although a bankers cheque is as good as cash they can only get the cheque if money is in the holders account.

cheers phil

I'd personally do the same.

Edit: Glad it went smoothly, though.

Having worked in financial services all my life I would not accept a bankers draft either, they get stolen in bank raids just the same as the cash from the till so you have no way of knowing whether it is a legit one or a stolen one.

Yes, tell them to pay cash on collection.   Thats the only way to be truly sure.... or get them to give you a Bankers Draft/Building Society cheque, rather than a personal cheque.  They cannot bounce as the building society takes the money from their account instantly when they draw up the cheque.

But cash is best IMHO.
