FC usually does not need any pegging out for the main living unit. Also, if it is a pennine or conway unit, it will have alot of the caravan luxurys as standard, eg fridge, grill, hot water, oven, heating etc etc. FC usually easier and quicker to set up. But FC is heavier, bigger and needs a bigger car to tow. TT is much more basic (usually just a posh frame tent), but are more spacious, more 'camping' than 'caravanning', lighter to tow, easier to store as the trailer is much smaller, but takes alot more effort to set up. Both types are brilliant fun and good to holiday in but the FC has more comfort, the TT has more 'back to nature' appeal. I have used both, and i have enjoyed both for the above different reasons. Do not believe TT is inferior - yes it is cheaper and more work to set up but yes! - they are by far the biggest camping unit available today!! Both are more fun but less convenient than tin tents!!

Last week a couple of children (about 7 years old ) described our folding camper as a caravan with an awning on top. Brilliant description!!!

We turned up at a CC site in Wales this year and a group of kids gathered. The bravest one exclaimed "Look at that - they are camping in half a caravan!". The kids really believed we were going to sleep under the stars literally! I invited them back to the cruiser once the canvas was up and they were amazed. Because they had never seen one before they all wanted to get inside and look around, so we let them! I hope they went back to their tin top owning parents and told them how cool a tent on top of a caravan can be

I've always described folding campers, like caravan base with a tent top. They can be used with or without an awning (like a caravan), but you can store them more like a trailer tent (the best of both worlds). Most have a seating/eating area, beds, cupboards, cooker and fridge on board. Hope this helps.

There seems to be fc, tt and many types of unit in between so far as equipment and luxury goes. But it seems to me the true tt is the biggest when pitched, and the true fc is the best equipped with less fuss setting up. I have had both and i loved them both. Price comment from generalhawk is very true too - tt is loads cheaper to buy. We now use a tin top and miss the canvass above our heads. But we lose the outdoors feel and gain even more convenience and (some of it pointless) luxury. But this is all at the expense of weight, size and manouverbility! No one unit is best - buy what is best for you! I really like the look of the new cabanon curved tt designs - if only i had somewhere at home to pitch it if we had to pack away wet......

Our FC was once described as a caravan with a bandage around the middle. I thought it summed it up nicely as ours is a hard top.
