On the electrical side of things I believe that in more modern cars there is an electrical point (probably behind rear light cluster) which designed specifically for when a towbar is fitter. I know when you look on sites that sell towbars you get electrical kits specifically for certain makes of car with these points. It makes fitting a lot easier.
It's an additional expense though, for mine it would have been an additional £70, just for a length of wire with a plug on it!

mine was £30 for the towbar with electrics, and then i fitted myself one saturday afternoon. electrics are dead easy you just need to meter out each cable as you apply the relevan switch.and trace it back to the piccy in the back of a caravan club manual form 1989 (this particular page ahs ebeen doing the rounds in our family for that long me dad has fablonned it )
------------- everything can be fixed with WD40 and gaffer tape.
If it moves and it shouldnt --Gaffer tape
If it doesnt and it should-- WD40
I fitted ours but it was to 1998 Avensis. Easy peasy really . Well if you are competant that is. DO NOT forget to paint it like I did. I needed the tow bar the next day to bring a trailer back from Cardiff to the midlands so had to take it all off to repaint it later.
New cars can have all sorts of bulb checking sensors and circuits so it might not be so easy to put one on a newer car. Ask Towsure.
If you can afford (amd trust) your local garage, get them to do it. Some mobiles are crooks so if someone here has given you a solid recommendation , consider using it.
hubby did our towbar himself on our VW Touran...tho it was a bit of a job but couldn't bring ourselves to shell out what the garage wanted to fit it! Bad enough having to shell out for the tow bar...like you the first car we have had which hasnt had one fitted and now after years of tents we've got a fc and actualy NEED a towbar!
cant speak for all makes of car but fitted my own on honda crv after purchasing the kit from towbar internet site. It turned out to be made by WITTER and must admit the instructions were very clear and easy to follow. It took about 3 hours to fit but it needed a lot of room as the boot is stripped out and the exhaust had to be dropped from its fixing brackets. However best to get it fitted by expert if not sure.

I have fitted two towbars, one to a Nissan Almera 1995 and one to a Renault Laguna 2000 both single electrics. Both bought via internet and included simple easy to follow car specific instructions, the electrics were a bit tricky to isolate correct wires for lights on the Renault, only because iot has stop/tail bulbs and needed to find each wire, but otherwise a easy afternoons work.
