Do i think you are doing the right thing? OH YES!!!!

Just a few years ago i picked a lovely campsite nr Dumfries in Scotland. The website showed pics of the site bathed in glorious sunshine so with the image in my mind and with our Conway Cruiser hooked up off we went. It was a grey day but held off raining just until we arrived. After about an hour we were sat in our fully erected camper soaked and frozen huddled around our little fan heater drying out. The nights were worse as the wind and driving rain swept the campsite dropping the temperature to just a few degrees. Getting out of bed in the morning was like jumping in an icy pool and in the evenings we rarely ventured into the freezing awning except for the loo which was a memorable experience!!!! Packing up was easy as we didn't care anymore and just threw everything together. My lasting memory though was peering into the dark through our rain soaked awning window and seeing a rather nice Coachman caravan with a warm glow from the interior lights and the occupants watching TV in their PJ's. A month later our camper had gone and we were sat on a campsite near Oxford in our lovely Avondale!!!!!!

If I start to hanker for the canvas experience again i just think of our trip to Dumfries and I soon come to my senses.

We bought our camper in November and sold it in mid May for considerably more than we paid so I should think if you were to sell it to be pretty quick. This is of course just MY experience though!! We bought and sold ours on ebay so it might be a good idea to moniter what they sell for on there.

Hope this helps!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Heh! Heh! Heh!

Don't get me wrong cyrilthepost! I love the idea of the FC and under different circumstances it would be fine but with a wife who needs the home comforts and a little boy who needs room to spread out i'm up against it!

And i don't think we'll ever see a summer like that of '76 again....but here's hoping eh!!!

I honestly don't understand why we have a whole forum incapable of putting a jumper on. They don't cost much to buy/knit, and the heat is free!

I don't know what this site is coming too, I really don't. Afraid of a little bit of bracing dampness in the air. Wusses.

We sold the tin tent two years ago and went back "under canvas". Best thing we ever did, we camp more now than we ever did with the van. Still, what is good for one is not always the best for someone else, good luck with your decision to go to the dark side.

Mike

Thanks for that Charlie although what we experienced in Scotland was a good deal more than "a bit of bracing dampness"
We bought our van as we do enjoy touring the UK and Europe throughout the year and when we're on location we like to spend our days exploring and seeing as much as we can in the time we have which is why when we return to the site after a long day out it is nice to settle down in our warm and comfortable van and relax.
I do have a good selection of very nice sweaters though and i tend to wear them when we're out and about sightseeing. I don't wear them in our house though so its nice not to have to wear them in our van either.
Maybe i am getting a bit nesh in my old age but at least when we're on a campsite i don't have to put up with it!!

Cheers   Dave

we have just seen the back of our fiesta, but only ,partly because of back probs, and just felt slightly cramped in it even just the two of us[she can hit me without leaving her side of the unit!!! ] and we are now on the hunt for a pullman /cruiser ,not too worried about the damp situation, with packing as we have ample space here to open up when we get home but as for a van, nope! the FC is just right at the mo and she wont tow that and i dont want to tow a van,as for seagull64 and coming back to a nice cosy van after a day out fair play, each to their own, but wev`e used a timer for the small blow air fan and it is normally cosy when we get in, also... jumpers were meant to keep you warm,, even in summer!!!

We've just moved from a folding camper to a caravan.  Definately been in one BIG circle though.  Camplet Trailer Tent-Conway Cruiser-Sprite Muskerteer-Avondale Leda Mendip-(then started all inclusive holidays abroad)-12 Man Dome Tent-8 Man Tunnel Tent-Trigano Randger 575LX & now a Bailey Ranger 550/6.

The reasons why we have gone back to a caravan is as follows:

1. Less hassle getting ready to go away (for the odd one nighter etc), as I can pack the caravan up during the daytime when OH & Kids are at work/school. As al I have to do is open the door and walk in, no having to errect it to pack it.

2. It does not need to be dried out if it gets wet (OK the awning may need to be, but that is no different than the awning on the FC)

3. Easier to break camp as well and a lot less hassle especially if it is raining.

4.Can be used all year round without any worries

5. A big positive for me is a toilet (I know many of you do have toilet compartments in your folding camper, but ours did not)

Againsts:

1. You have to make the beds up nightly (we have just bought a 6 berth van, it has fixed bunks that curtain off, so these don't have to be made every night).  This only leaves us the double bed to be made up and on the odd occasion the side dinette bed area if my son wants to sleep in the van and not in his pup tent.

2. It's longer on the drive, but that's not a major problem as even with the folding camper on there we could not fit two cars on it.

3. Probably more money spent on site fees & diesel as we will be going away more often than what we did in the fc!!! 17

Having tried out tents, caravans & folding campers.  I think we have made the right decision for our family.

If you are selling on EB I would go for a classified ad, as it is a one-off payment with no final valuation fee.

Good luck

Thanks lissabuff but i was only responding to an earlier post.

We've owned a tent, folding camper and caravan and all have advantages/disadvantages. It's just a matter of picking the unit that suits you the best and helps you to enjoy your camping experience to the fullest. At the end of the day that's what really matters!!!!

Cheers   Dave

We are leaving the folding camper world and entering the tin tent world.  I have had enough of the awful weather, packing away wet and all the set up.  We are buying a caravan.  So now to sell our FC, hope we have done the right thing!

Is this a good time to sell?

can you give me some details and pics if possible please if its still in good condition?

cant beat the rat a tat tat on the roof when it is pouring down on a tin tent. somehow. makes ya feel good. being in the dry. and not walking thru mud for the required loos.. i may go for a tin tent next year. but small one. as its just me. so a two berth will be all i need. as well as the appropiate bottles of beer. any advice on the best make of two berth would be appreciated. does not need to be new. but in good state and ready for use.

OK all gone now, my folding camper was sold with hours and has been picked up today.

It went to a lovely family, who were thrilled with it.  So decided now to buy the Pegasus 534 after seeing one yesterday.
