Success!  Took our Designer out for its maiden voyage yesterday and set it up in a nearby campsite. (Got it out the garage fine- just took it slowly, with my husband taking the weight at the front and me guiding it at the back.  Once we cleared the garage, we turned it round so that the towbar was facing downhill.  This made it easier to control using the handbrake.)

My nine year old daughter and I slept in the Dandy overnight.  There's still some snow lying on the ground and temperatures were predicted to be around -2, but we had a little 100Kw fan heater on and were lovely and warm all night in our sleeping bags!

I was a bit worried abouy getting it into the garage again when we got home, but it was much better this time round.   We removed the spare wheel from underneath as has been suggested, and lowered the jockey wheel as low as it could go.  This gave us a much better angle to approach the drive with, and my husband and I managed this time to push it up the drive with the towbar pointing out with not to much trouble.  I think having removed the heavy awnings from the top helpd, too!

I'm now not so worried about getting our Dandy into the garage, and I'm looking forward to many happy nights camping in it!  Thanks to all for your advice and help- I'm also pleased to note that I think I have converted my husband to camping in a Dandy.  He seemed suitably impressed by the luxury of comfy beds and a sofa!

I've recently bought a '94 Designer to replace our '89 Dandy 6. When hitched to the towball it sat unacceptably front high and tail low. The reason seems to be that this vintage of Designer has a an original towing height of 345mm while modern towballs are at 400mm also there has been a bit of settlement in the indespension units. My solution was to insert a couple of 40 x 25mm rectangular section spacers between the 'A' frame and the hitch plate, effectively dropping the nose by 40mm and creating the spacers shown in the following photos to raise the rear by about 90mm. Result - A trailer that now tows level.
