Wasn't there once a 70's comedy series about the Camplet Concorde on tv? George and Mildew?

I see your point, but it is a long standing joke and will carry on regardless, anyone researching dandys will have read enough posts to get the idea. Most people recognise banter, with or without smilies, and no one ever posts bad comments (unless factual) to an actual query. Lets not perpetuate the stereotype of campers being grumpy old men.

I am a grumpy old man and have been all my life. My nickname even thirty ago was Uncle Jolly. Grumpy Old Men do have to have a good sense of humour though or the BBC couldn't make such a good programme out it. Now I'm sure you were not being serious all is forgiven. I know that Dandys are the butt of a longstanding joke on here - perhaps I just snapped. I was going to complain "why just Dandys" and then Marconi has to come along and spoil it all.

I say let them laugh at us dandy owners!

We will have the last laugh, our unit can be packed away soaking wet and does not need to be opened again when home to dry out!

I have owned a conway trailer tent and a caravan in the past, its all down to personal choice and what suits.

Whats wrong with smilies? Happy Happy Happy

Cheer Up, Just Have Fun!

Dont you all miss getting the camper out the day after your trip?! Its a ritual with us to be honest. This year we packed it away dry twice, and then didnt know what to do next day. So,out it came anyway. It gets the beds aired that way, surely you have to do that with a Dandy?.. Here are some smilies to make up for previous posts!

ian we used to have to dry the beds after winter camping because of the condensation under them, but since we started putting a self inflating air bed on top not enough of our heat gets through to cause it.

No - we've packed up in the wet and come home and not put it up again until the next year to get it ready. Bone dry, not a problem and no smell. Not trying to convert anyone or gloat, just answered the question asked.
Thanks for the smileys That's the first time I've ever looked at them there's quite a lot of them to choose from isn't there!

We spent 5 weeks touring Europe in ours this Summer. Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Netherlands & home on the ferry from Amsterdam. Great in the heat & in the cold wet windy weather. Brilliant piece of kit! Will post more on the caming abroad section soon.

Thats well informed Dandy haters,if you dont mind.I think that maybe the fumes from the pvc erodes owners sense of humour! Good luck Rivadan, I hope you enjoy the dark side.Perhaps you could line the new van with bin bags to make you feel at home!

Is this just good natured banter or do you actually really think that Dandys give off PVC fumes? That's utter nonsense. Have you ever camped in one? Before you go accusing me of having no sense of humour I think you should have put in a few smileys if you were just having a josh. I'm getting a bit fed up of non Dandy people making unfounded comments on here about smell, fustiness and fumes, and before anyone starts I've never had condensation in mine either. I would never criticise other sorts of camping units unless I had tried them myself and I tell you once you've tried a Dandy you won't find anything to criticise.

Spot On , we changed from a caravan to a dandy a few months ago, we had 2 dandies before 1 orange 1 all brown 1970s early 1980s models, we agree guys who think they know all but  have never used a dandy speek crap.

Dandy can be alterd to the way you want it, and we have had a camplet, a combi camp that whwen i got it home and set it up in my daughters yard the canverse riped due to being damp, the dandy would never due that .

Dandy rules for us the 1 we have now has jest had gas struts fitted, it had 240v done by a preev owner, it has the Origanel PVC Brown and white matching Awning all is great conditian for a 1987 Folding Camper  not a TT

As a previous owner of three Dandy's as well as numerous TT's and folding caravans, I will add my comments.

I think that the Dandy's are a great idea and I was never uncomfortable or cold in any of mine. They towed like a dream and can be packed wet. My only criticism would be of the erection process (all of mine were older 70's 80's models). The side walls were damn heavy and my wife struggled to hold them whilst I put the spars in (she couldn't reach)and feeding the top over was a struggle as well. If there was an easier method of putting them up I would buy another one tomorrow.
And yes, I've followed all of the instructions and helpful hints to erect them.My TT's have always provided plenty of room and have proved less weighty to erect but take longer due to all of the poles (mainly Conway units)
and I have always dreaded rain on the day of packing up and the thought of having to dry out when getting home.
Nowadays, with age and ill-health creeping on I will stick to my folding caravan. The best of both worlds, at least for my situation. But, as has previously been said, each to their own and whatever suits their needs. As the old saying goes, "never judge a man until you have walked a mile in his moccasins" (at least then you'll be a mile away and he won't hear you)

I intend to live forever. So far, so good.

We remember ours, a 5 something, with great affection, our first "up grade" from our Blacks frame tent and our camping solution for five or so years in the early eighties.

Now progressed to an opulent top of the range Hymer caravan affording great comfort, but do you know we enjoyed the Dandy days camping every bit as much as days with anything we have ever had.

Not that we could go back, far too spoilt and physically far too old though not so degenerated not to remember how good, practical and affordable they were. A British solution for British camping.
