i think piglet makes to most important point in her first post - it's about what works out right for you - for how you need to store stuff, how you want to go camping etc.
I have been through what seems to be just about every stage in camping - started in a 3 man tent with hubby and our dog in a 2CV ending up with car + roof box + trailer tent and now an FC. For me, with all the options prior to the trailer tent, there was a day's organisation and packing, because i had nowhere to store the trailer with the gear in it, followed by hours of pitching after whatever journey. It meant that weekend camping was pretty much off the agenda for me, so I got the TT - a huge trigano vendome with 2 awnings. There was enough storage in the trailer to fit almost everything in, so it was only a case of pack clothes, hitch up and go. The space when the tent was up was massive and the beds may solve some of the problems mentioned here, the bigger bed on the vendome is huge - bigger than an ordinary domestic king size and a back problem means that sleeping on the floor is no longer an option for me, it may not matter at all to others.
The problem for me was putting the trailer tent up, with only one adult and one child it took hours and everything still has to be taken from its storage place in the trailer and put in its place. I do have to say that for a fortnight in france, it was perfection, I couldnt fault a single thing about it and if that were all I wanted to do, would never have parted with it, it also towed like a dream. I sold it to a huge family, I think there were 6 children, who working as a team would have been able to get pitching down to something entirely possible for a weekend and have plenty of space to live in.
For me and my camping needs the FC was what I needed all along. I have a conway tardis with an awning, which we only really use for longer stays, for a weekend it takes minutes to put up - we now have the whole process from arrival to kettle on down to about 40 mins, without awning, only an hour with it, have plenty of room for me -large lady, daughter of 5' 2" and two large greyhounds. So we often go to local places for a weekend and have discovered that it feels just as much of a break less than 10 miles from home, simply because it's camping. Packing away wet can be a bother with both TTs and FCs which was never a worry when I used a tent as I could easily dry even my 10 man coleman inside the house. If you have space to store your TT or FC at home, that may be less of an issue. If you don't, thats probably another cost to ownership.
