shilling is illegal, and grossly unfair to genuine ebay users

We had a similar occurrence, though for a much lower priced item, I forwarded all correspondence to Ebay (buyer "I ain't selling 'em for a tenner, you can have 'em for £30...") who did nowt other than allow me to leave nasty feedback, the seller went on to relist and do exactly the same again... plonker!

I never list for less than I am prepared to sell for.

As already said it is not wise to boast you are committing an offence under the Business Protection from Misleading Marketing Regulations 2008 and/or the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008.

Many people/businesses have been fined amounts in the thousands for shilling.

ETA: One example of many -

Lisa, I'd also just walk away...you might end up with a camper that's cost you a couple of thousand with a slashed canvas or something...it's just not worth it for that amount of money.

I once had an issue with a lady who was selling fake Radley handbags...and although she never actually mentioned the word Radley in her ads, she posted pictures of the Radley imprint on bags and the dog tag...I paid over £100 for a bag that when it arrived was quite clearly a fake...it obviously wasn't just me as there was a lot of bids...I took it up with ebay and they stopped her account...she no doubt went on to open another account, but I got my money back.

And I am telling you as someone who works in the legal industry that makes no difference. No matter if it is you, a friend, a relative, or a co worker, it still falls under shill bidding.

However it is of course your own decision whether you listen to my advice.

All I can do is offer advice.

In the end, I guess people not listening keeps people like me busy.

Fair enough just looked into it some more and you are indeed correct.Ive learned something new today. Ive only used the tactic a couple of times and dont sell a lot anyway.
Wont be doing it anymore now i know the legal consequences and it was only because of the high fees for higher reserves that i thought of the idea.

The picture and descriptions sell everything ive listed for good prices anyway.
Just sold a kids bike we bought ages ago for £12 for over £30 because of the pictures, surpising really.

Thanks for the advice, i honestly didnt know it was illegal.

Ebay can be a nightmare, I too have sold stuff for way under what its worth, but I usually just post it, its the chance you take, then again if it was a genuine mistake by a new user, its easy to do.

I don't think Ebay can force you to sell it, if you decide last min not too. I've seen it before where the buyer says when they went to get it ready for the sale, it was broken (after all) or stolen (yeah right, lol) So you may have to put it down to experience. Anyway if you have already left neg feedback, I'd say you definitely won't be having it now

Ebay can be great and rubbish at the same time.

I have had people win auctions then don't pay...........and now you cant leave negative feedback as a seller! Then if they are reluctant to pay but you manageto persuade they have to, then you can garuntee you will be getting negative feedback regardless. Me and the other half have both sold stuff for more than we paid and made losses on things we would have sowrn would do well!

Going back to the original point yourbest walking away.........no point trying to force the sale through because you can be sure the seller will be so unhelpful! Even though you are 100% in he right!

What's the point in them folding campers, there silly........................2 months later I own one!

I found that if you want a realistic price for stuff that you're selling on Ebay use Classified Ads.
Yes buyers can make an offer below this price, as you can with any classified Ad. It's up to you then if you accept that offer.
It's worked for me both selling & buying and the costs are reasonable too. (don't ask me to quote costs, because I always check on the Ebay pages first)

If you look at this one on completed listings it didn't sell and is in your price bracket. Might be worth messaging them. Only a mile or so from us.
We fell out with someone once over refusing to sell when we had won and got nowhere. Ebay banned them but we didn't get our stuff just a refund. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/pennine-pullman-535se-folding-camper-/140995899123?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item20d402aef3

hi. we looked at this one, but we actually had one exactly the same as, but sold it some 6 years + ago, as the kids no longer went with us, been down the fiesta route x 2 - TTx2 and now the countryman! felt we didn't want a unit older than what we have[04] now we have a larger engine vehicle, her indoors would like to go to that size unit so the one we :lost" ,we knew was an absolute bargain if we got it, but hey ho!! we'll keep looking , but thanks

We bought our FC through eBay and got an absolute bargain by jumping in early. 2006 Pennine Pathfinder + Awning was up for £3950 or offers - offered £3750 and he accepted.

Took me ages to contact him for his address as he turned his phone off because he got laods of enquiries. Next day drove from Notts to Preston to pick it up and he was on the phone to another interested party offering him £4500 (I could hear the conversation).

Fair play to the guy, he told them we had first dibs and he would contact him if we decided not to buy (having inspected the FC). We did buy it and he said he was gutted that he had no real idea what it was worth until he'd already agreed the sale (he'd taken it in part exchange for a caravan).
