I wouldn't call it 'a load of old porkies' to say you need twin eletrics for the Crusader. As has already been said, the grey plug doesn't just power the battery charging circuit and the fridge - it also powers the reversing and fog lights on the trailer. I don't know how you'd stand, legally, having a non-functioning fog light, but from a peace-of-mind point of view, I'd like to know it worked. If I ran into a fog-bank with that brute of a trailer behind me, I'd like to know that the driver behind me could see it BEFORE they ran into it!!!
You can operate the fridge whilst towing without having to open the unit - you can reach round from the door and switch the fridge to 12V. Although you still have to carry the food to site in a cool box, at least the fridge is cool on arrival. It's also nice to know that the battery is nicely topped up when you get to site - remember that the water pump and toilet flush have no manual back-up ... if you are on a site with no mains and the battery goes flat, how will you manage? If you 'splash out' on twin electrics you can plug the trailer into the car and at least have emergency power for these little essentials until you can get the battery charged.
We had two tow-bars with twin electrics fitted for about £360 (I'm sure ScampisOH will correct that figure if I'm wrong, but it's close enough!!) - one on a Mondeo and one on a Picasso. I would not have a tow-bar with single electrics fitted these days.
