I've used ratchet straps on the top of the trailer but I'm not happy with it. I also tried ratchet strapping down a Halfords gutter type roof carrier but the straps wouldn't hold it when the bike was mounted. I've got a Maxxraxx with a swan neck but getting an adaptor is £150 and then an extension bar is another £50. Carrying two adult and 2 kids bikes on it worries me, even though my Galaxy has a 90kg nose weight. I'm thinking of just sticking all 4 on the roof of the car but that has its problems as I'm a short a**e and would involve higher tolls iof we ever go to France.
Should not involve higher tolls in France, you would still only be a class 1 vehicle. We used to have bikes on the roof of a Xsara Picasso and were charged class 1. We only stopped putting on the roof because although I am tall, I nearly dropped a bike on the car getting it up there!

Yes, just means you can't use the, generally, faster lanes defended by a height restriction board.
Not sure about 4 bikes with the FC ... suppose it depends on the size of the kids' bikes ... and your overall bike plus Maxx weight ... are your bikes steel, carbon fibre, alu???
You just need to do the calculations.
I carried bikes on roof top for a couple of years ... yes, a boring lift, particularly if you are vertically challenged! ... airflow is disrupted, meaning some extra fuel consumption ...
I'd put three on your MaxxRaxx and one on the back of the camper.
