Hi Michelle,

we just got back yesterday. I booked four nights at Haven in Mablethorpe and we ended up staying another two nights so you can tell we enjoyed it.

Towing was a piece of cake as you hardly knew the trailer was there. The only thing to get used to is reversing as you steer slightly the opposite way - so if the trailer appears in your right hand mirror you turn the steering right to correct it and vice versa. You can always find a big, quiet supermarket car park one Sunday to have a practice reversing.

Some pics of the TT last week:

On the negative side - we arrived on bank holiday Monday when it was roasting hot and it took us 4 hours to put the tent up. I hadn't had a proper trial run due to work commitments and poor weather before we went. A friendly fellow camper came over and gave me a hand in the end as he could see we were struggling - my kids are 12 & 10 by the way.

It took about 2 hours to take it all down yesterday. On both days it was dry and I could see it being a different story entirely if the weather had been wet.

We soon got used to having to walk across a field to go to the toilet etc and I managed tea and toast in the morning on my gas cooker - I bought some UHT milk sachets (and small packets of sugar) plus margarine instead of butter so no need for a fridge.

To be honest I think I will sell the TT and get a touring caravan though. I would prefer the convenience of being able to arrive and quickly set up regardless of the weather and I would like some more luxury such as a bathroom, fridge and better cooking facilities.

Ah fab - sounds like you all really enjoyed it - you have done better than me - I have been a normal tent user and my max is 4 nights once a year and I have quite a LOT of equipment. I found the nights really cold this week but I took hot water bottles and they worked really well. I also have a portable gas heater just to take the chill off before hopping into the sleeping bag! Having a trailer tent must have been luxury for sleeping compared to a floor - I cannot wait for my experience of this when I use my trailer camper for the first time.
I think you did really well considering you're very new and had limited supplies. Perhaps over time you can build your collection. So for example, my parents take along a pop up privacy tent with one of those cassette toilets with chemicals - absolutely brilliant - especially for night time. (I used to use a camp kazi - loo shaped bucket which also did the trick when I first ever went camping - pregnant!!!!)
I can now purchase one as my car will no longer be filled to the gunnels. Also, with electric hook up (which I am yet to experience) it's a whole new ball game apparently - I cannot wait to experience that! I bought a Cadac grillogas last year - it's pricey at £100 but it's just fab. I only need a one ring burner for kettle - although with my new camper - this will change my experience totally. Over time I bought collapsable cupboards - they are really useful
The camper I have purchased literally goes up in 10-15 minutes (once you know what you're doing!) - I think the awning might be a different story but hoping a fellow camper may help me too if they see me struggling :) but for odd nights I will not need it. There is a sink for running water too. I could not tow or store a caravan so this is the next best option for me
I have bought a 2006 Conway Countryman - it cost a lot so hoping I will get my money's worth.
And yes - may just take myself to an empty car park to practice - my dad will be towing it home for me on this occasion til I get a tower fitted.
It's great to hear of your experience - I guess my other worry is going alone - I have only been once a year as that was when my folks could come with me. This will be a whole new experience for me. Happy camping :)
ps: what was your site like in Mablethorpe?

oh - also - invest in a cool box - good campsites will have freezers and you can swap your freezer blocks over each day - I took fresh milk and it stayed ice cold - I even had cereals and I have to have milk straight from a fridge for that! I even came home with some of the milk and it was still fresh as a daisy. I took meatballs, bacon, sausages, cheese, butter, salad coleslaw - all stayed cold and fresh, even though cool box was in the tent and it was really warm in the mornings/daytime. Mine was not expensive from Amazon - just a basic model with a car charger - but it blew my fuse in my car (got a faulty issue in car as only just replaced fuse) so unless you're travelling for hours and hours - you only need a bog standard cool box in my opinion with cool packs. That will also enhance your camping experience. My first camping trip was hard as not only pregnant but kept losing stuff - so again, over time, buy collapsable containers to store stuff - and for taking your pots to the communal sinks. My folks have everything so I get a lot of ideas from them! :)

Hi Michelle, thanks for the tips - I did consider a coolbox but I'd spent loads and had to draw the line somewhere and stop buying more and more stuff before our first trip.

I already wrote some feedback for Trip Advisor about the Haven site - here it is:

"Booked a 4 night stay in the touring area and ended up staying 2 more nights - would have stayed longer but work commitments prevented this unfortunately. We have stayed at various similar sites over the years in rented Static Caravans including Pontins in Prestatyn in May this year (which we hated), Coral Beach in Skegness and Land Guard on the Isle of Wight. This was the nicest place we have stayed so far and we intend to make it a regular destination now we have found it. This was the first time we have tried camping after buying a trailer tent a few weeks ago.

I read many reviews before visiting and didn't experience any of the problems which others have mentioned. There were no massive potholes in the touring area - the roadways were slightly bumpy but fine at low speeds. The toilet and shower block were always quite clean - yes they can be slightly pongy at times but they are heavily used and unless you take the roof off the building for ventilation there isn't much you can do about it. I saw people cleaning these areas at 06:00 and 07:00am most days.

We enjoyed the fish and chips on site - slightly expensive but didn't mind the premium for the convenience. Plenty of other places to eat without having chips all the time - had a nice Italian at Fantasia in Mablethorpe one night, a lovely carvery at the Beck also in Mablethorpe, a Hog Roast pork sandwich at the Ranch in the funfair area at Skegness etc etc.

I enjoy a couple of pints in the evening and on most holiday sites they serve Carlsberg for some reason which I hate. Here they had Carling which was very nice and at £3.70 compared to £3.30 in my local not too badly priced. Sometimes the queues were quite long but I found you could choose between the Live Lounge, the Restaurant or the Galleon upstairs so never had to wait long to get served especially in the Galleon which I presume people did not realise was there.

We also had a walk down to the Ferry Boat pub which is owned by Haven and a five minute walk down the road off site. No problems getting served there and we enjoyed seeing live singers on both nights that we visited.

The touring area was about 10 minutes walk from the entertainment area which wasn't a problem (but could be if you have mobility problems).

The pools were fun, the changing rooms were clean and the water in the indoor pool wasn't at all cold. The water temperature in the indoor pool was perfect for a fun pool but too hot for swimming - the outdoor pool was cooler but not cold and once you jumped in and did a couple of widths you were warmed up and having fun.

I was woken up one night at about 03:20 by what sounded like a very loud alarm going off. I headed to the toilet like several other campers I bumped into and after walking towards the main site it was obvious the noise was coming from somewhere off site and I found out the following day it was the local gas works so not Haven's fault.

The evening entertainment was typical of any similar site with two rooms to choose from - the Live Lounge and the Galleon. There wasn't so much emphasis on bingo that you get elsewhere which suits me as I don't play it. My kids thoroughly enjoyed the holiday even though we had to walk across a field to go to the toilet in the morning and it was cold going to bed in our trailer tent every night. We will be back again next year but I'm planning on buying a touring caravan and selling the tent for a bit more luxury. "

Cheers!

Justyn.

Rather than getting a caravan, look at getting a Dandy folding camper. They are insulated and can be packed away when wet due to being made of pvc. Like a trailer tent they are easy to tow and to store.

Hey Costajus! Your camping journey is a really great one to read about! You're WAY more techy than I am and I'm full of admiration.
I picked up my new Countryman yesterday and I'm extremely excited to go out in it for the first time. I wanted to go this weekend but instead I'm planning to put it up in a nearby yard and really take my time to get to grips with it. I've booked a weekend for the following week.
I'm also single parent camper with my two girls. My son is a bit older so he won't be a regular in it and my husband is yet to convert to the camping vibe.....i'm hoping the luxuries of the folding camper will do it though.
My two girls simply can't wait!!! We're all as excited as each other.
Ive been camping a few times and whilst I love the camp living, i really, really hate the sleeping of it, so I'm looking forward to a bed off the floor.
Happy days!
Vx

Hi Vivebunny,

thanks for the reply and compliments. I work in the automotive industry so I'm quite lucky in that I have loads of tools and am able to do most things myself. For the things I can't do myself such as fitting tyres I have lots of contacts in the trade.

I used double air beds to go on top of the MDF boards that form the two double bedroom areas then we slept in sleeping bags with duvets for extra warmth. It was a bit chilly at night heading to bed but toasty warm after a few minutes.

Hopefully my story will help a few other newbies in some way. I've advertised the TT for sale though and will be looking out for a Bailey Ranger 4 berth touring caravan over the winter when hopefully prices are a bit lower.

The one funny thing that stuck in my mind from our first trip though ... going outside the tent early one morning to be greeted by the sight of a small boy peeing in a bucket round the back of his Dad's transit van!

Justyn.

Hey Vivebunny. I pick my Countryman up on Saturday. Like you, I'm going to find a field and have a go first. I think the trailer bit will be ok, but the awning might be tough! Got to get my tow bar sorted first. I have 3 boys and like you, my oldest refuses to join us! His loss. My younger 2 are well excited like the sound of your girls. Please let me know how you get on on your first trip. Any tips/advice you find along the way, I'm happy to hear them. I'm nervous about towing but sure I'll be fine. I think this trailer will be luxury compared to the tent!! Plus canvas is so much better. Cooler in Summer, warmer in the cooler months. For me this is about making memories and spending quality time with our loved ones! Happy days! 😊

Justyn, I did chuckle about the little boy - bless him 😂

I will Michelle!
Towing is so easy, it really is. Well, I've not reversed yet but I figure if i get into any kind of difficulty I'll just cheat and take the trailer off, it's very easy to manoeuvre.
With trailing, I'm always super cautious at the beginning of the journey and then about 10 miles down the road forget it's there. You'll find it easy I promise. Just know your car is double the length, stay out of the fast lane and if you're overtaking normally people flash you to let you know you're safe to pull back in. It's very easy. What car do you have?
I just found out that most sites don't like vans, so i'm biting the bullet and having a tow bar fitted on our Sharan (cos we have the tow bar on the van). My poor husband thought the spending was over once I bought the trailer........!! (i think it's only just begun. I want a Remoska next......)

Haha. Good plan about the reversing technique. Another lady camper told me to only reverse if it was absolutely necessary and only in a life or death situation!! 😂
Thanks for the encouragement! Now I need to google Remoska!.....

Ps. I have a 1.6 Ford C-Max. The trailer is about the same length/width.
I have to learn how to 'park' the trailer on my drive which is quite narrow! The car will be relegated to the road until I can sort out the front garden under my lounge window
Hope your first weekend goes well 😊

Hello Michelle,
So yesterday myself and my girls successfully put the caravan up. I'm ashamed to say it came with some shouting and stress. To be really honest, I was a bit nervous I'd made a mistake (buyers remorse) and worried about going 'live' next weekend...so I was a bit nervous and worried. (Silly really).
We did manage okay and it was a good idea to test it out first. Haven't the faintest where some curtains go (near the kitchen) or which poles attach where. We didn't attempt the awning - mainly cos I might try that in the calm and serenity of the camp site, and if i can be bothered. Otherwise I'm leaving that for next season. I figure I can only jump 1 major hurdle at a time.
I have a shopping list: water bottles (fresh and waste), an electric thing for the hook up. If i can't work the water out i'll slum it and just use the big camping bottle I was using last camping trip, and my gas burners. Baby steps I'm thinking, not major hurdles. !!!! I'm really hoping for a very helpful and friendly neighbour next weekend, ideally with a countryman but any knowledge is gratefully received!! haha.
We've gone from camping to rather posh caravanning so we're missing some major increments in learning....but we'll get there.
it took us AGES, but next weekend will be better. It's all good fun, we're all still very happy and excited.
How did your dry run go???

My water in clip thing at the side of the trailer is REALLY stiff....is that normal? There's a flap, and then a smaller inner flap which i believe you put the hose into, I couldn't open the inner flap and didn't want to break it.
I'm ringing the original owner tonight to get a heads up on the bits and pieces. it's all good.

P.S. I am very happy with the trailer. When I first saw it I knew it was in excellent condition, but I was in a slight hurry when I bought it. I asked the owner how long they got to learn about it when they bought it and she said two hours. yesterday I was really regretting not asking more questions.....my fault, it's a learning curve isn't it.

Have to say the online help is very poor for videos etc. But again, cos we missed out on so many of the steps between camping and caravanning, I guess that's just stuff you learn as you go.

Hi vivebunny. My folks came with me to collect the camper yesterday - I need a towbar yet and that's not being fitted til Friday. So today, my folks came and we took it to a country park to give it a go. I tried it all on my own but knew I'd struggle with the second bed as it's lower. Just not got the strength to lift it on my own, but confident my (almost) 11 year old son can help with that. I watched several you tube videos before so although I'd bloody forgot my phone, I remembered it all and put it up in about 20-30 minutes. The video for penine fiesta is the same. What stumped us was the metal brackets for the sofas. One of the beds seemed to be bolted down and was impossible to find the bracket holders. Then we realised we'd trapped the mattresses as we'd opened it up!! Lol. My mum took a flask so we set the settees up and the table and had a cuppa!!
Then proceeded to take it all down. I have taken out the inner bed tents to give them a good wash. It's in good clean condition but a few bits need a good clean and some of the poles need a kind of polish. I really struggled in getting the apex poles out. In the end we had to gently hammer them out. Again, I did most of the taking down alone to ensure I can do it. It was all packed away in 20 mins.
I have not attached any water pipes/pumps yet. My folks are I are going to take it out again in next few weeks once my towbar is fitted and my dad will then show me how to attach the water etc. If you still need advice, I'm happy to share once I know myself. I'll try my awning then too! But I figured for smaller trips, I might just get a gazebo!!
What age is your camper? Mine is 2005, but the canvas was replaced and the fabric on the sofas with the 2006-2009 model colours. Shame the curtains don't match but the awning does (thank goodness) does yours have bed skirts? Unfortunately mine don't so that's my next search. They cost a fortune even second hand!!
Let me know how you got on when you contacted the previous owner. You must let me know how you get on next weekend. I love mine. I don't regret buying it at all!
I need to buy a leisure battery and gas bottle for mine for trips where I don't have ehu- never even had ehu with my tent!!! My seller threw in a tv aeriel, the electric cable and a portaloo.
I look forward to your next update 😊

Mine is this year, the owner only used it twice for long weekends and it really shows, it still feels squeaky clean and has the bubblewrap on it. yes, it came with the skirts, battery and gas so that's a big relief. I've even got the TV bits too but I don't really want to have a tv. I'd rather do a jigsaw with my kids! :-)

I just spoke to them and they're really helpful.....it's all good. I'll let you know how I get on next weekend!

your parents sound great, just the support you need. :-)

Personally, if i were you i'd change all my soft furnishings cos I like sewing and stuff like that. Then you can make it whatever colour scheme you want!

Vx

Oh my! Yours will be amazing!! I love the look of the new ones and the decor is very nice - Has yours got the toilet?
I won't be using a TV much but I do have boys and they are a total different species as I'm sure you will know as I think I remember you saying you had an older son. I will be sure to pack all the travel games I can find :)

I would like to change my curtains, but I am extremely poor at sewing - I will have to get them made up - but that will have to wait....
I'm glad you got the water thing sorted - and good luck for next weekend
