Put the awning canvas cross-ways over the axle (as Jan P said) - it's a big lump to have at one side behind the wheels. Our Pathfinder has an Alko stabiliser - it was fitted when we got it, so I've no idea how it would behave without it. All I can say is it has been perfectly well behaved behind a Mondeo, a Picasso and a Disco with the stabiliser.
We too had exactly the same problem with our crusader we bought the Alko 2004 stabiliser pack and it has never swayed let alone snaked again.
In the begining we tried: loading it differently, tyre pressure keeping our speed down but as soon as a lorry or caravan passed us it would make it sway and if we were going down a hill it would be worse. We have had trailer tents and a caravan for the last 14years and never had this problem. If we dared put the bike rack on then it would snake even at 40 mph (and we had checked the nose weight). It came with an Alko 1300 fitted but that only reduces movements by 30% and up to a weight of 1360kg, the unit is 1000kg unloaded so maybe it was not big enough to cope (Don't quote me but i think the Alko 2004 goes upto 2000kg )
Anyway i have spoken to my husband before posting this and he said it does prevents snaking from starting like JohnG has said previously. If you are going to pay out you may as well get one that you know will definitely do the job (Look on the Alko web http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/directory2/details.asp?revid=784&typeid= site that is what we done and it tells you what each ones does and the min weight/ max) .
At the end of the day you want to hitch up and go without the worry of having an accident, we think thay are well worth every penny prevention is better than cure LOL !!
thanks Tree , it sounds exactly the same as i had.The 2004 sounds as if it could do the job. Was there any problems fitting it or will it go straight on using the two normal bolts
820 unladen max once laden 1000kg. You'd have to work hard to seriously overload as there isn't much space. Tyre pressure has an effect and always try to load evenly front to back and left to right with the heaviest thing over the axle. The front locker isn't enormous so there isn't the temptation to bung loads in and the the wardrobe falls front of the axle so the majority of the free space lies over the axle anyway. They don't catch the wind which helps. I suspect most snake when going down hill too fast, 1000 kg is still a lot of tail. Always go down hill in the same gear you would expect to go up that hill.
------------- Good friends are hard to find, difficult to leave and impossible to forget.
Sorry my mistake, glanced at the Cruiser column instead of the crusader. As Jan has pointed out 1000kg is the max loaded weight. (You can only load 180kg into the unit but to put that into perspective that's about 10 to 12 adult bikes!)
