Hi

Sorry had not read your last post, you can get just about anything from sunncamp directly, just put sunncamp in your search engine.  At the end of last season we were pitched at the top of a site and as we were decamping the wind took the awning and bent some of the poles We have just purchased a full awning from ringing sunnflair/sunncamp directly and they only cost £185.00 delivered (we did try a tt retailer but they wanted an extra £45.00!!)  Be warned the plastic clips do snap easily.  Any tips from any one ?

Back to the EHU question...you have to be aware of what kind of power your appliances need before plugging them willy-nilly into your EHU. Most UK campsite hook up boxes will only deliver up to 10A, some only 6A. If you overload them the box will trip, and usually this means the warden will have to come out and reset it. Occasionally a box will carry four hook up points and you can trip them all, or very ocassionally, the whole campsite.

I`m not good with electricity so can`t remember the exact sum that you do to turn wattage into amps required. You should post on the equipment forum about this, or I`m sure there`s a sticky thread somewhere about if you try "search". I do remember though that the usual rule of thumb is ONE heating appliance (single ring of cooker or kettle or hairdrier or microwave or grill etc) plus one low drain appliance like a light at a time. Or you can have three low drain appliances like chargers.

I think a big Foreman grill might be too heavy on the EHU, but a smaller one okay. As I said, post on the equipment forum.

Plastic clips, now. What do they look like and what do they do? Most clips and such in a TT are identical to these used in canvas frame tents and caravan awnings, so are availible in most good camping shops that sell caravan spares.

I agree with Val regarding the George Foreman - the larger ones may be too powerful and you could trip the electrics (which won't make you popular!!)

Personally I would invest in a good camping stove which run off gas (if your TT doesn't have one already)
When we got our first tent, we bought
 a 2 ring stove with grill which runs off bottled gas - it also has fold down legs and it's the best bit of kit we ever bought.
I have cooked for up to 12 people on there very successfully - curry and rice, stews, meatballs, pasta, Full English brekkie, even a Sunday dinner of sorts!
Check out Towsure (item code G162) which is very similar to ours but it doesn't have the fold away legs so you'd need a kitchen stand too.

We also have a BBQ which we use but I don't like to have to rely on that for all our cooking and I like to keep our EHU for lighing and heating.

Well, somewhere on the box it will give the power rating in watts. What does it say?

Doesn't give the details of the wattage on that page so don't know if it will be too powerful or not?

Have you got a stove as well or are you just planning to use the Foreman Grill?
I was just wondering how you were planning to boil a kettle, heat soup or beans, cook pasta and rice etc... ??

Aha, here`s a useful link

My little GF is rated 1100-1300watts, so my bet is that your`s will be too powerful.

There`s a plate giving the wattage on the underside of the grill.

Mathew buy some disposible BBQ's from the £shop, use them and bin them

mathew did you see the tent up before you bought it? you seem to be paying a lot for spares for the TT

when you use the electic, make sure you only use 2 things at a time, like toaster and heater, or tv and lamp, (BTW we just take a small table lap)

The make and number of plugs on your EHU makes no difference as to what you can plug in. It is the amp rating from the bollard on site that will dictate what you can plug in and use.

A 1100w appliance will use about 5 amps and a 1600w appliaces will use about 7 amps, so you wouldn't be able to use it on a site that only has 6 amps at the bollard.

There was an an article about this in Practical Caravan recently and this is what they said:

Basically what you need to do is some simple maths.
Add together the total wattage of all the appliances/lights you want to use.
Then you divide the watts by the volts to give you the amps.

For example:
Heater = 2000w
Kettle = 750w
Mains light bulbs 2x40w = 80w
Fridge = 125w
TV = 50w
TOTAL = 3005w

3005w divided by 230v = 13 amps.

Whether the site has 6A, 10A or 16A you still have to be careful as it doesn't mean the whole site can be drawing this current at the same time.
The less demand you place on the site's supply, the lower your chance of tripping the bollard out (including all the other people connected to the same one as you - NOT a good way to make friends with your neighbours and the Wardens!!)

Try to avoid using heavy current draining appliances (domestic kettles, microwaves etc...) If you can't live without these things then make sure you buy low wattage appliances.
Also remember that some appliances like microwaves and TVs use more current on start up than they do on steady running.

We usually use a couple of lights and a heater on EHU.
All our cooking is done on the gas stove and if we do need extra lights, we use battery powered camping lanterns.

This is a very simple guide but we have copied it and put it in with our camping stuff as a rough reminder:

HOOK UP RATING                          MAX WATTAGE
       3 amps                                           690w
       6 amps                                          1380w
      10 amps                                         2300w
      16 amps                                         3680w

Hope that helps a bit.
Just remember that it is better to over estimate power usage than to under estimate and you should be fine.
