We just got a very competitive quote for the Kyte through 'Caravan Guard' insurance. BCC have been v helpful again advising which companies were likely to quote.
Hi chisbits, where do you camp on Scilly? We used to go there quite a bit until we had the children. If its feasible to take a trailer tent, we might try it next year.
Do any of you holtkamper owners have the bunk bed system? We are thinking about it,
Xray
X ray, Sorry for the delay in reply.
We have camped on the Garrison on St Mary's for the last 6 years or so as my parents stay on St Marys too. We had to make sure the Kyte wasn't more than 78 inches wide to get through the archway near star castle! Ted on the campsite tows the trailer up the hill for you with his truck and leaves it on the pitch straight off the ferry! We have used a normal trailer for the last 3 years and it worked brilliantly. Just a leisurely walk up the hill to book in and wait on your pitch for it to arrive! So easy. The campsite is not 5 star by any means but it is an absolutely stunning location, convenient and good for our 2 boys as we stay in the big family field and there is the big football pitch and pirate play area next to the campsite with all the Garrison headland to explore too around the site. Hope that helps!
Hi TheWebsters4, I just sent you a PM on the trailer tent forum as I can't see how to do it on here?
Very happy made the right choice. Just looking forward to using it this year. We've already booked to go to Europe at may half term holiday which we would have never done before! Just seems so much easier/ less hassle to pack up and go.
Hope this is ok to post here (couldn't see a more relevant thread). We're currently torn between an Eriba pop top caravan and the Holtkamper Cocoon aero (the one with wind force, smaller living area but bigger and enclosed front canopy). Obviously each has its relative advantages and disadvantages. The one thing which we're struggling with and unless we can borrow both for a few days (!) will never be able to work out is thermal performance i.e. the cocoon has far better insulation than ̣rdinary tents/trailer tents so completely sold on how nice it would be in south of France in mid summer BUT how warm can it actually be kept? Could we ever be comfortable say when Easter is at the end of March in the UK? And other than the usual tent camping warm bedding/hot water bottles/etc for the night what would it take to be comfortable in the day when it's 10 - 15 degs outside- Quartz fire/oil filled rad in the living area? Any experiences greatly appreciated by this tropical plant like camper :) thanks v much
We had an Astro and camped in the Pyrennees in May temperatures that were -2°C at night and in the South of France with daytime temperatures up to 38°C.
Obviously we had a heater ( as you would in an Eriba) for the colder times and the patent airflow system worked treat in the sweltering heat. ( Evenhad caravan owners joining us to keep cool!)
Have a Kyte and use a 1.5kw fan heater for the living area (approx 3M x 3M) coldest we have been camping in the UK it was going town to may be -4C overnight we were fine and did not use the heater overnight.
I find fan heater better as the warm air is circulated so no cold spots.
We have a front wall for the kyte but have never actually used it.
The quality of the pegs supplied is very good but I still use delta pegs for the corners of the front canopy generally 3 but in strong winds have been known to use 5 for each corner. I arrange them in a circle so I have all wind directions covered. Storm pole fitted in strong winds and when going off site for the day.
Foam insulation under a carpet also helps stop cold from the ground early in the year.
We also have a Kyte. We camped at new year and also have been away this weekend which was much colder.
We use an oil filled radiator and find that once the tent has warmed up it keeps its temperature really well. We've also just bought an Outwell Fuji hanging heater which we hung from our awning pole and that took the chill off quite nicely.
Thanks everyone - really useful info, so pleased that it doesn't shed heat faster than you can get it in and therefore opens up a few more weeks/months of use :). Had a really helpful chat with a chap from Holtkamper at the NEC this week and following up with BCC but nothing like a long term owner's perspective :). Can I ask how each of you store your trailers - always gargaed, just garaged for winter or out all year around but e.g. with layers of insulation over winter? Thanks again, really appreciate it.
We store ours outside under a Kampa Trailer Tent cover at a caravan storage site.
It went through the first winter last year with no issues at all. Just make sure you put something under the HK cover to allow rain water to drain off. I'll be going to fetch it soon from storage so I'll report back on the success of winter #2.
We can't wait for our second season in the HK. Last year we had 42 nights away in it, and it was a joy!!
First time for us in the Kyte XL, touring in France , currently in the Ardeche. After putiing it up for the 4th time everything seems to make sense and you realise what a wonderfully engineered thing this is, the attention to detail on every fitting / design feature is amazing. The tent pegs are the best EVER. We just went through a thunderstorm last night without any drama or leaks. I can see us doing this for many years :).
So glad you like it Obodiah! We are currently in Annecy in ours and have survived 2 thunderstorms this week. Somebody else on this thread warned me about the attention we'd get but I didn't quite believe them. We've had ours for 3 years now and without fail, every single outing, I have given at least one person a guided tour! Enjoy every minute of it, I know we have!
