I didn't get a chance to speak to the folk at my own college, but I'm doing a course at uni and one of the other students is a lecturer (teaching apprentice sparks and industry) from another college.

I asked him about the caravan situation and I will try to summarise our 5-10 minute discussion.

Hookup lead should be minimum (his word) IP44, correct cable (can't remember his terms) and both the campsite post should and van should be 30ma RCD protected. He also mentioned that the post itself should have no more than 3 sockets. I asked him about the IP55 rating and he felt that this applied more to static vans and would apply in the toilet , shower area - didn't talk too much about this.

I asked him about RCDs and their reliability. He told me he has seen one fail - sat buzzing at him, but wouldn't trip - only one, but it can happen. Also mentioned that when an RCD is fitted now, the installer is required to stick a label beside the RCD to state it should be tested every 3 months.

He said that a good earth (which can be difficult to acheive sometimes) is just as important as having an RCD fitted. He said RCDs are great when they work, but that doesn;t mean you don't need an earth, just in case, as this will then trip out the mcb if there is a fault in an appliance.

Mentioned my setup (proper camping hookup with RCD) , and he thought that was fine - but no regs for this, except the campsite post.

Didn't discuss tents - it was home time and he wasn't a camper himself, I don't think he could have given a generic opinion/answer.

Fair play to him, I don't know how it remembers all this stuff, but I suppose he's paid to know it inside out.

Poor Magdalena what must she think she's started! In summary don't buy a cheap nasty one buy a decent one and place it somewhere its not likely to get rained on. Kitchens get pretty damp but we all use kettles. However I don't use my hairdryer in the bathroom (should that be hairdrier?) Sorry Rizzo I am in Wales! just popped back to see Hereford win!

I got a 4 gang one off of Ebay for just £19.99 plus free P&P, A total bargain, and have used it 4 times without a problem, I just dont know what all the fuss is about, besides if these ebay cables where dangerous then the law wouldnt allow people to sell them,

I say go ahead, you can go wrong at that price,

Regards,

Wrong, wrong, wrong. EBay sellers can and do sell products outside the law. If you want to buy a potentially unsafe unit that doesn't meet required electrical regulations (BS7671:2008 - Requirements for Electrical Installations) then go ahead. You could kill yourself or someone else - or at the very least be reliant on the site's own means of shock protection. Personally I wouldn't take that risk. Better to buy proper kit which should cost upwards of £50.

The only type of hook-up to use is the proper camping ones.

Either of these are what is approved on most sites.

 triple socket  single socket

If it does not look like either of these do not get one. These are the ones that are made for use in large tents and trailer tents.

I am just getting red crosses no pictures what can I do about it please.

WOW....!

Using ehu for the first time this year, bought the electric pack just yesterday from Casey's in Chester. I'm now thinking of taking it back for a refund!!! I'm planning on using it for my new trailer tent (canvas camper up to now). I've camped for many years and have never heard of anyone getting injured using ehu- but i must admit i'm a little nervous now.
