Hi I know I've read about this before on this website but I can't find the link.  Can anyone tell me how to convert watts to amps so that I can work out what appliances I can have running without tripping the electrics.

Hi Glen,

Watts is a unit of power

Amps is a unit of Current (Flow)

Power = Voltage x Amperes

W =  V x A

Hope this helps

To make it even easier than W VA

Assume V is 250

4 amps for every 1000 watts or 1 Kw

So 1250w / 1.25Kw will draw 5 amp.

This is a bit over what will actually be drawn, mainly because the voltage will be a bit lower than 250, but it makes it an easy calculation and gives a bit of cautious leeway.

A little pedantic, I know, but using 250V will give you an underestimate of the amperage drawn.

Its a good rule of thumb though as you'd probably be better off staying an amp or two below the site supply
