Hello,

We joined this forum along time ago when we were considering a folding camper, at the time our finances changes and the idea was put on hold. We are now in a posistion to buy a Trailer Tent to start our trips away.

We have 3 Children (6 year old and 4 year old twins) and are looking to buy something that may give us 2 years fun to make sure it's for us (Well Lisa really, I cant wait).

Any advice on where to look, what we can get for around £150-£250

Well, Ebay is always a good start, if only to get an idea of prices and brands. Your local papers and Adtrader are good too. Also ask around...you`ll be amazed how many trailer tents are lurking around in back gardens and folk pleased to sell them on.

For £200-ish you`ll be looking at an older model, probably 15 years plus, but you should still be able to get something in good working condition that won`t leak and isn`t torn. I bought my 1989 Conway Camargue for £200 plus a tent as part exchange, and it`s in excellent condition, though faded and with a few scuffs. I reckon I`ll get another ten years out of it with care.

We bought our 1986 Pennine Clubman in March 2005, we paid £250 for it, we kept it a year then upgraded as we loved camping so much. When we sold it it still had years left of use.

Ours had one owner who looked after it well, they always put it away dry. Keep an eye for tears when looking. Also I think a good camper will only smell of canvas. If put away wet and not dried straight away it will make it smell or worse still rot it. We went to view one once and the guy had both his neighbours light bonfires to throw us of the smell of damp. Have a look at bed boards they should be pale in colour with no water stains.

Good luck you will wish you`d done it sooner, we do.

We bought our trailer tent from ebay £200, acouple of years ago - its great and still going strong.

I would advise you to check out all makes and keep watching ebay for a couple of months, asking  buyer questions, getting an idea of what you want and what's on offer. Make sure you see it up before you buy and get instructions on how to put it up & down (one of the problems we had, but thanks to Ratty on uk campsites got a copy via email)

Good luck and happy camping

I put an add in our local paper and was amazed at the response of people ringing me and offering me their trailer tents, only one problem I wanted a folding camper!

I have also seen in our local free adds in our local paper twice this year free trailer tents as space needed in garage.

Also check your local freecycle and why don't you put a wanted add on there?
