Finally, after over a decade of having our TT of the moment parked somewhere else, we`ve had the back gate widened, a ramp made and I can mess around with it to my hearts content, packing it up the way I want. Yup, can do this in someone elses drive, but it`s 100% easier when you`re only ten feet from the utility room where you keep all your gear anyway.

Anyway, as we`re going away for our long summer trip in a few weeks, I decided to pack away the new kit I`ve bought for it (sun canopy, new table etc) plus all the items that float between the TT and the tent camping kit, which is a lot. Plus gas, batteries, gas cannisters and such.

And you know what? Packing a TT is such a joy compared to packing a car. For both you start off with a vast pile of kit on the utility room floor, but whereas your heart starts sinking half way through packing the car, with a TT you keep on tucking things into lockers and drawers and the footwell and there is still space.

It`s like magic...two sets of poles, groundsheet, four chairs, two tables, two gas bottles, stool, beanstalk, four sleeping bags (though I took them out again in case they got damp) two camping mats, one self inflating mat, the long seat cushions ...and that`s just in the footwell, and there`s space left for two currently empty fold up plastic crates for things like food.

All the kitchen equipment is in the kitchen. That`s it. No more packing or unpacking necessary. There`s even cleaning kit in there, and buckets and a washing up bowl.   And all the pegs and mallets...and the TT wheelbrace.

And don`t get me started on what I`ve put in the side lockers. Yes, sun canopy, two undertents, hanging larder, two pocket tidies, all the towels and linen and fleece blankets and pillows and curtains, gas cannisters and batteries, EHU, laundry things, beach mats, badminton and ping ping bats, and...well, dozens of other small things. One side for day to day use, and when the other side is emptied of bits of the tent, we can use it for storage for things like books and such. And there`s still space left!

I bet you`re all laughing and saying "Yup, Val, that`s what TTs are for, you know?" But the rest of the year I`m a total minimallist because it HAS to all fit in the boot of our Mondeo Estate. So to be taking all this stuff is a rare novelty for me. And I haven`t put so much as a teaspoon in the car yet......though once we have the CombiCool, four lots of personal posessions and the snorkling and bike gear in, it`s going to be pretty full too.

Makes me wonder though...there`s folk that take a trailer and roofbox just on weekend trips. I`m going for five weeks, and I know for a fact I don`t really need all this stuff for a long trip, because I`ve done trips just as long with only a car boot for kit. If it wasn`t for the fact that most of the TT kit, once stowed, doesn`t need to be rearranged in any way before use I wouldn`t be taking a lot of it. I can`t stand doing major pack ups between sites. How can people be bothered with this volume of kit without a TT?

Beats me, I like the idea of widening the back gate, I'm trying to persuade my OH to do the same.  I'm fed up of opening the tt on the drive and not being able to pitch it properly when it needs to be dried etc etc

Well done Val, it.s nice to have it handy on your own premises.  We are lucky, our's fits up the side of the house, we open it up in march and reload all the items we removed for winter, including bedding and pillows. then at the end of october we unload it for the winter.  I dont think I cound pack and unpack each time we used it, it would spoil the trip. We haven't had damp pillows or sleeping bags yet and have been doing it this way for many years. The only thing we put in the car is clothing and first day food.

I totally understand where you are coming from. Just picked up my Vendome two weeks ago and used it last weekend.

Perviously I had a normal tent but packing and unpacking the car was a total pain.
I just love it with the TT. Everything including the kitchen sink is in there, Microwave, BBQ, awnings, toilet for the midnight pee trips, the list goes on.

Agree Val how lovely and how much you can get in the TT, everything you need plus the kitchen sink.

My only moan is that when we decide to use the normal tents for a shorter camp everything is neatly packed away in the TT, it's such a pain then having to route around for all the bedding, cutlery etc, we try to do it from the house and kitchen and nearly always forget something.

When we finally bought the trailer tent (from the friend who`d lent it to us for the previous five years)I just decided to duplicate all the standard kit like crockery, cutlery, pots, chairs, lights etc. I prefer to keep my lightweight kit seperate. Only things that go too and froo are the sleeping bags, EHU and gas bottles.

It gave me the chance to colour-coordinate all the new kit with the TT too, lol. Ohhh, I had a lot of fun shopping for that little lot, I can tell you!

Val, I've been reading all your posts,  which are v interesting and have already given me a lot of advice and help as I have just bought an old Camargue .  The trailer tent needs a little TLC which I am happy to do.  I finally got it up by myself on Sunday, without too many problems which wasn't bad as I didn't have any instructions. I am going to waterproof it tonight.

However, when I came to look at the kitchen, I had a nasty shock.  Both the support brackets underneath the kitchen unit are loose at one end.  These are the brackets which slide onto the square poles which pull out from the trailer.   I think they will need to be riveted back on.  I think towing the unit without sorting this problem out would be dangerous (even though the kitchen would be attached to the trailer by the brackets).  We wanted to use it next week.  Have you come across this problems before? Do you think it would be safe?

Kind regards

Beverley

ps any other advice v gratefully received.

I`ve never heard of this problem before, no. I know what brackets you mean though and they`re there to stop the kitchen unit moving sideways on the pull out supports. Are the brackets completely detached at one rivet? If so, if you went round a corner at speed, say, the side clips wouldn`t prevent the kitchen unit moving sideways.

You can`t take the trailer unit without the kitchen unit on the back either, btw, because the trailer wheels are placed in the correct position to balance the trailer +kitchen. (In Conways with no on-board kitchen, the wheels are in a different place.)

I don`t think you should be towing it far without getting the brackets re-riveted, sorry. There`s potential for losing or damaging your kitchen unit, and possibly causing a bad accident. However I don`t think it would be a difficult job at all to get two rivets replaced. Local garage? (I`d rope the kitchen on securely even just to tow the trailer there, btw.)

Also, might be worth asking on the
Conway Owners Forum.

Once that`s sorted out though, have fun with your new Camargue! They were the flagship model of their time and can still hold their own agains a lot of the newer models for comfort and durability. Which one have you got? Terracotta canvas means `86/`87, grey/yellow means `87/`88 and grey/burgundy (like mine) means `89.

You can also have a good giggle at the old catalogues, here.

Hi Val!!

I completely agree.  we are just redoing our driveway and are fencing in part of it so we can put the TT out of site from the road so it is safer and the OH is going to hinge the fence  panels to make them great big openings!!

We have had lots of fun this week hunting for folding tables (Towsure have an offer at the mo down to £17.95) and a fan heater (quite the wrong time of year so it has been a bit of a hunt).

You are right though, once the drive is finished clearing out at the end of the season and airing in between will be great as ours hasn't been used since aug last year (we bought in Mar) and it smells rather musty!

Thanks for the tip about the Kitchen.  We took ours off in order to get it from its marooned island and haven't fitted it back on yet.....

One and a half weeks to go - hooray.......!!!!!!!

Debbie & Neil
