Just a quickie,
How do you guys (n gals) get on with general security when camping? I'm still a complete noob at this and still trying to find out the basics really. If you off load things like camping cookers, clothes - I've even seen people with T'V's in a tent. When you go out for the day - what happens? it all get left in the tent?

It isn't like there's a lock or anything that a good Stanley knife wont get through on these things so paranoia would start to creep in.

Is there an insurance premium that campers can take out to cover your gear?

Sorry for the silly questions, but it's been bugging me for a bit and I thought I would ask the collective :)

Cheers

Wayne.

Common sense prevails.

dont leave anything of value in plain view, cover them or put into your inner tent or glove box of the car.

also if you are dubious leave a radio on v low volume in the inner tent pref on talk shows etc it does help create the illusion the tent may be occupied.

We were tent campers for 6 years before we got our caravan last year and we never had anything stolen from inside our tent. We found that most campers are a nosey lot (in a nice way) and will notice if anyone suspicious is hanging around someones tent. So get to know your neighbours and look out for each other. Obviously do not leave anything valuable where it can be seen, but don't worry too much and happy camping.

But still hide valuable items out of sight or take them with you

Our camper has a door the locks, but a sharp knife would soon make another entrance!

We hide/take small valuable stuff, but things like the TV have to stay put. To some extent I surpose I just hope for the best!

have been camping for over forty years never had anything touched or taken ever .Could be that we have just been lucky or that campers on the whole are an honest lot.

we love camping because it is like going back thirty years i.e. back to the days where you left the front door open or a key hanging inside the letter box.  I like the fact that we can just 'trust' the locals.  I am sure that there is the odd rogue but we always leave everything lying around and have never had a problem.

Getting to know your neighbours is a good thing though - enjoy and relax :-)

I'm sure campers are a real honest bunch!

Been abroad on hol and my daughter had her digital camera pinched more aless from under her nose round the pool, also stuff like towels and lilos been nicked.

But I have camped for years, and never worried about anyone taking anything, obviously like people say above wouldn't leave stuff out on view, but I never think twice about it!

Never quite understood why the Pennine fc's have a lockable door, when all you have to do is unzip the top part of the door, lean inside and unlock from the inside

We've installed a mini-safe (electronic) under one of the bed lockers - bolted it through the floor.

We have never had anything stolen on a campsite - had the odd football go missing but they always turned up !
