I take it you are both Dandy lovers then tentpegjenny and  georgegarside

We did look at these but the wife seems to prefer the layout of the Conway or Pennine's although i am open to suggestions on any really.  Do you think the ones i mentioned are good units or are you aware of any common problems with them that i need to be aware of when looking?

We had a 1990 Pennine Pullman as our first camper and couldn't fault it. The only reason whey we changed is that we were offered a 2001 Pullman for sale locally which we couldn't refuse.

The only difference apart from the colour and the type of veneer used between the two years was the bed size, the older the beds were the same size (same layout and sizes as the Pennine Stirling).

As for what to look out for when viewing them:

  1. Check the panels and make sure that none of them feel     spongey, this can be a sign that damp has got into them.
  2. Check for the same in the front box

Good luck, hope you find one soon

The main comments that I have seen on here on comparing Pennine and Conway are that the slide out beds on the Conway have been known to stick for some people (others have had no problems) and that the Pennine canvas seems to be slightly better quality. I can't vouch for this as I only looked at Pennines as that's all our nearest dealer stock. I would have gone for the Pullman myself, but storage was an issue and the older Sterling can just fit through our 206cm wide garage doorway. That said, the Sterling is amply big enough for me and my 3 children - two of whom are as tall as me already - so I'm glad I was forced away from the Pullman and saved myself a bit of money

Good luck with whatever you decide to go for. I'm sure you won't regret getting a FC whichever one you choose.

Claire

Just got back from a Dandy meet in NOrth Wales in my Dandy.... I have packed my dandy away with no intention of doing ANYTHING with it until I next use it! The weather was horrendous .. wind And torrential rain .. flood conditions. All tents went home basically... Guess what a field of Dandys and we were all fine......

I know everybody thinks I am mad going on and on about my Dandy but they really are fantastic. A large quantity of the Dandys on the field were built in the 1980's and the occasional 1970's one and they are still going strong with original fittings... and original tops, everythings. I am not saying that other units are not good it is just these units that look like tiny houses when put up are just so bomb proof somehow. They get overlooked but they are so comfortable and easy to live with ... and I really love mine.

is there anywhere you can see pics of one these with everything setup, cos i was confused before has what to get a van,tt,comi or one like you got
cos the ones on ebay just show the main unit not awnings and everything else set up,i know vans are great has you turn up and your done(which i dont mind)but i love the sound of the rain and wind under canvas(or is that me being odd i wonder)

Found a few in your price range on adtrader, might be worth a gander to see what you can get for your money.

Hi clacka,

This is one of my favourite subjects,

I have friends who all have their individual likes and dislikes on folding caravans and trailer tents.

having listened to and looked at most of their arguments for and against i decided to go my own way.

My choice is a Gobur 10/3 foldind caravan which is so versatile if you are handy at all.

the reason for this is the height of the fold which does away with the compact way of folding after use

Mine has a double bed come table at rear and single bed come table at tow end.

by doing away with the wardrobe I have managed to a three way fridge(g/e/b),a caravan cooker i.e oven ,2 burner cooker & grille, sink, draining board & pumped water.

I have an an awning if i have more people my normal is 4 adults and two children.

the caravan is so simple to erect it can be done by one adult in five min. The awning takes slightly longer but no problems.

My Own Design So Don;to Try To Buy One Already Converted,

Happy to send on photo's if you are as nosey as I was

If you are not the handy type then my advice to you is be nosey and ask a lot of questions as everybody has their own likes and dislikes and some take two to erect

yours

longwinded

DAVIDD2

Hi there, I was in the same boat as you last year. After many years in a tent with my wife and two children,  I fancied a bit more luxury so I scanned ebay one weekend and bid on a 1995 pennine pullman. I won the auction, paid £1250 for a really nice folding camper and have never looked back. The pullman came with an awning which gave us plenty of room and I would recomend this model to anyone with a couple of kids.

Personally, if my budget was £1000 I would go for a newer model trailer tent than a very old fc, but that is entirely your choice and depends on where/when you will be using it - as your living space in a trailer tent is mainly in the awning. Here are some examples within your budget..Conway Royale. Here's another Conway Mirage and Conway Spirit  oh and Sunncamp

Check what extras can be thrown in, especially things like aquarolls, EHU cables, fridge/cooler as these are expensive items.

Claire

The Royale looks a good buy I've had one for five years now and its still going strong great tent and if you dont put the liner up in the 1m anexe you have oddoles of space

Hi,

I would reccomend a Dandy.  Even very old ones are generally in good condition due to the PVC cover.
