hey there john,

well, i went mad looking at all the different trailer tents and folding caravans, i was lucky enough to be in the position that i had 3 grand to spend. i wanted something that i could pretty much do on my own, i also decided i want the kitchen inside aswell, i think it is important firstly to be aware of what your neeeds are as a family space wise, then layouts i most like the layouts of the peninne, i then looked on ebay and was worryed that they were all to far away to view. so i went to a local shop who had them errected and showed me several times how do put it up and down. then i realise that there was so much to know about and rember. finally a big importance was saftey and security, if i bought from this reprubal company they would give me 1 hundred pound to spend in the shop put in the electric new tyres and also mot as so to speak, i compleatly rinsed the and got about 4 hundred pound of opional extras and 1 year warrenty, plus it anything went wrong they would fix it in that year. so i would say do your homework, researce, and good luck sam...

Hi John

It's mind boggling, isn't it!

I spent many weeks googling after very nearly buying a new Sunncamp at a local dealer.  It's very much a personal choice, I had a list of things I wanted from my TT,  ie.  Kitchen in awning, [so not a folding camper at the moment, maybe when the children are older] , I wanted the option of a big unit, but also wanted to to be able to have a smaller awning if I wanted.  A good quality canvas and poles, and a few extras [loo room and wardrobe etc.]  My OH was prepared to travel quite a distance, but one on my shortlist [2 year old Trigano Chantilly] turned up on ebay about 10 miles away!  We completed the sale privately, and couldn't view properly because of the weather, but got a good feeling from the sellers, however I would have preferred to see the whole thing set up.  What we have managed to see of it so far has been great, hoping to set it up this w/e [weather permitting].

I can't really offer you any advice as I'm new to it myself.  I'd shortlisted certain makes models, namely Conway, Cabanon, Raclet and Trigano.  I could have carried on adding, but I had to stop somewhere!!

It's worth taking your time to research, whatever you chose, I hope you enjoy it.

Hi John

Like most of the others, we looked at several before deciding on a Conway..I like our one because the trailer in small and light and I was not feeling that confident about towing! I am the only driver in our house and well...you know the jokes about women drivers and reversing so imagine that with a trailer on the back!!

Our small trailer is great to tow and is actually very roomy erected..just depends what you want. Just remember one thing...although the beds are off the ground, the mattresses are rarely very comfortable so maybe a mattress topper is a good idea?

Anyway...enjoy camping; welcome to our merry band and I am sure you will never regret it!

First make a list of what you want

  • to sleep how many
  • to include what cooking facilities
  • to be erected how quickly
  • EHU or not
  • how much you have to spend

Then decide whether the folding camper plus awning - slightly more expensive but well worth the extra is an option.

agree with pennine plodder but also consider the pulling power of your car and also if you have somewhare/space to erect if you have to put down when wet this could be a problem with a trailer tent thats why we went for a riva . hope you find what you want ..

i think for us it was the size that mattered, after having a 16ft frame tent the natural progression was to a bigger trailer tent as there was 5 of us, we didn't want to be tripping over theother's toes as much.

bought a raclet herald which came with the optional extension which makes it 6.5m x 4.5m....and a pup tent so 2 of my kids can sleep under.
the cooker is also a nice lightweight affair too. pleased with ours? yep!

Hi John, have owned two different trailer tents in the past,Conway and Sunncamp it's just my opinion but I wouldn't buy another sunncamp, the conway make just seemed better.

But if it's an option think about a folding camper too.I can put one up on my own which I couldn't do with a trailer tent.(also no pegging out......what a bonus!!!)

Makes not normally mentioned Camplet, raclet and combi although latter 2 claim to be folding campers they are essentially more trailer tent like in character but excellent units in my opinion.

folding campers I have a Dandy and am biased as am in love with the unit as they are indestructable, usable in winter and comfortable.  Expensive initially although second hand you can pick up bargains they really are trouble free.

If you want canvas there is the pennine and conway although am sure good products are expensive.  Trigano have a cheaper alternative which is worth a look.

At the end of the day what suits any individual is just that 'individaul'  good luck.
