The C&CC club get a discount on the wightlink ferries, not a great deal off, 10 %  I believe ,I asked when I was booking my ferry to Ireland. No good to me as we already get Islanders discount . But better than nothing

Camping and caravan also do some deals that make the trip a little cheaper.

Seems that if you want to take a trailer it costs you a heck of a lot.

Try travelling later than 20:00 and avoid Fridays. Also, Towsure have some deals for five days off peak and four parks that can work out ok (watch out that the entertainment passes are or are not included). Would thoroughly recomment the carvery at Whitecliff bay. Been there a couple of times (though not as a tourer). It was a friendly place and is right next to what is in effectit's own beach on the eastely tip of the island facning the english channel.

It will never be cheap to ferry to the Wight, which maybe makes it always a special trip.

Either that or talk really nicley to the bloke in the car park with a big empty box truck (very unlikely). Only kidding red funnel.

Some of the camp sites do a really good deal on pitches and ferry crossings.

Check out both Red Funnel and Wightlink, for the offers on campsites and ferry combined, then check with the campsites named on the campsites own web sites for even better offers.

I didn't think the ferry crossing to the IoW was that expensive really, especially after I'd worked out how much it was going to cost to get 2 adults + 2 children + car + tt to Jersey That really is expensive.

We've stayed twice at a lovely site on IoW who do a combined service for the site and ferry: http://www.oldbarntouring.co.uk/

I have used Red Funnel a couple of times on their combined offers, although these were only for 5 day stays. Bargain prices though, worth a look. Offers are better early and late season, (as ever).

Thanks for advice but I may not of explained in original post that I live on the island, born and bred. So although people like to travel over here for a relaxing camping break, I like to get away and see other parts of the country. dont get me wrong, I love living on the island but as I work at a tourist based country park, it is nice to get away. And although a lot of sites on the island can include ferry discount in the price of holiday, the islanders travelling the other way have to pay full fare (there are some offers throughout the year but these are greatly reduced during the school holiday period.). I am paying £109 to travel from east cowes to southampton (return) before starting my holls,  so even a 10%discount through the C&C club would make a difference.

Thanks for comments steve

Hi

sorry didn't realise you were going the other way.

I'm appalled you don't get a hefty discount.  motorhome facts (but one word, leave out the space) gives a discount to some ferry companies if you subscribe to their website, but you can't see the list until you do. I suppose you could email them first to see if they will tell you if any are any use to you.

Lobby your council and MP.

Hi mikey,I will look into that motorhome facts idea. Just to let you know that the £109 cost of my crossing is for my car, camper, 2 adults and 2 kids travelling with RED FUNNEL in August. (Prices always rise during the school holls) The other ferry company, WIGHTLINK offered me an "IOW Resident's Standard Return" of £183. The standard return is £220.

I would be interested to know what price ICEQUEEN 40 paid for her trip and did her campsite manage to get a reduced fare for her.

As regards to lobbying MP, I have to admit all MPs that I can recall have pursued this subject and always ending up nowhere. The monopolies commission have also got involved but again the ferry companies came out on top.

Its not that I want a free meal ticket, I can stomache £50,£60 even £70 but now its crept up to over £100 it means that I can not use my camper as much on the mainland as I would like.

Oh well! Im off now to earn some money to start saving for next sailing, cheers for reply Mikey

steve.

Used to live on the Island myself too. Course I left when I was seven or eight so wasn't paying the crossing fayre.

Don't Red Funnel do a Gold Card ? Does this work out a lot cheaper for paying for up to 10 trips in advance. I did use them for a card for my company a while ago and was down to about £27 a trip or so. Course that was car and one passenger only so may not be very cheap and of course you have to pay a lot in advance.

Wales is nice. :)

Apparently the Solent is the most expensive stretch of water to cross in the world mile for mile (if indeed it is even that far!).

We are yet to take the caravan over, but the cost will be offset by the distance, ie not too much diesel!

Steve6163 - last time I travelled to the island was september 2005. I recall it was originally going to cost £90 or thereabouts for 2 adults, one child, car + tt incl return, then we added daughters friend to that so it came to around £110 I think return fare.

We didn't book through the campsite, we booked online comparing Wightlink with Red Funnel, the former being the cheapest. However that was 2 years ago and it was not in the school hols.

As an ex-Islander, with parents who still live there, I think it's high time a fixed link was built!  (Wish it was financially viable!)
