Sorry to bring an old thread up but I fear that according to my neighbour you may be all driving illegally

Last night we were chatting about unbraked units under 750kg not needing to be braked and he said that you were all wrong it depended on vehicle etc etc I even showed him at website stating what you all said to be true.

http://www.trojantrailers.co.uk/store.php?towing=1

I will try and get the website link for all his information.

As I understand it the limit for an unbraked trailer is 750Kg but not greater than 50% of the vehicles curb weight.

So for a 725Kg trailer brakes not required providing the towing vehicle has a curb weight of at least 1450 Kg

...thats it steve so its a bit worrying when you see smaller cars towing unbraked units that might well tow well because they are a trailer tent but when you look at the stats the car isn't big enough - eg a combi camp venezia is listed as 750kg laden and I know my car is about 1200 (meriva) but looks bigger, mine is braked but I know of others that aren't with similar cars, the dealers don't seem to worry about it at all but I think I'd feel morally obliged to point out the weight relation when towing if I was selling - but there again I wouldn't make a seller at all....

Towing a trailer unbraked:

Maximum unbraked towing weight is 750KG.or the gross weight of the unbraked trailer must not exceed 50% of the kerbside weight of the towing veichle.

Hi, If you are only towing it home on a level road you should be ok, just take it easy. I have just bought a 1981 Bonaire which is 975kg (look at the plate on side of trailer) I have operating/ service book for brakes if you have not. Send me an email and I will be happy to scan and send details to you.

Also as it took us about 5 hours to figure out how to put the thing up with ease the instructions are useless. I would be happy to help if I can. Ours is a 7 berth and the beds slide out at the front and rear. Its great can wait for spring!
