We have just taking up camping again after 30 years ( Why OH Why didn't we do it earlier?????? )

We started with a tent earlier in the season but now have a second hand Fiesta which we have really enjoyed. In fact we didn't know FC's even existed but have enjoyed it that much that we are considering going over to the continent next spring.

We live in Northumberland and would love to hear any suggestions as to the best and cheapest way to do it. Would it be best to go to Dover even though it would entail at least one night stopover on the way or would crossing from Newcastle or Hull be better.

We would probably spend 2 weeks away hopefully finding a little sunshine and warmth so not scandinavia ( am allergic to the cold !!!!!! Brrrrrrrrrrr !)

I would have thought it depends where you are going. You talk of warmth, so I assume its towards the south of France.

It doesn't make much difference which way you go. If you go via Hull, I think you can get a bunk on the boat and get a good sleep, but its more expensive. You still have to drive down though. Calais would be the cheaper route, but as you say you would need to stop over somewhere. Why not plan something on the way down and on the way home, and make it all part of the holiday.

I would certainly reccomend either of the Hull ferries. May be  more expensive but you gain a day and save hell of a lot in fuel. We have found the nights sleep on the ferry invaluable neither of us are good night travellers and you arrive on the continent refreshed and ready for the the journey at 8.30 the next morning. We would not cross the channel any other way! It is also part of the holiday!

Caroline, Jan and Simon thanks for the info about Hull. Do you book direct or through an agent such as carefree? 

I assume that you go to Zeebruge. What are the roads like from there down to France?

There's also a ferry from Rosyth (Edinburgh) to Zeebruge, it would be a shorter drive than Hull.

Folks...now you tell me about this route. We went South of Scotland to Dover [overnight driving - no stoping for longer than 30 minutes] and then to Calais. I f I had realised this route, I would have used that. So taralabradog, go  from Hull, you'll save at least 6 hours driving.
