I would have thought it depends where you are going. You talk of warmth, so I assume its towards the south of France.
It doesn't make much difference which way you go. If you go via Hull, I think you can get a bunk on the boat and get a good sleep, but its more expensive. You still have to drive down though. Calais would be the cheaper route, but as you say you would need to stop over somewhere. Why not plan something on the way down and on the way home, and make it all part of the holiday.
