We were making some  initial enquiries about the purchase of a trailer tent and was quoted various prices from £1495 to about £3500 for various models from the Sunn Camp or Cabanon range.

Whichever model you look at, the local dealer slaps on a £99 charge called

"ex works".

Apologies for being a bit thick .....  but what is this for?

Found this in the internet...

Ex works (EXW) is an Incoterm. It means that the seller X has the goods ready for collection at his premises (Works, factory, warehouse, plant) on the date agreed upon. The buyer pays all transportation costs and bears all risks for bringing the goods to their final destination. This term requires that the buyer must be able to carry out export formalities in the country of supply, these days almost impossible. Therefore in the vast majority of cases where terms are quoted EXW they actually intend the seller to carry out export formalities which means that the correct term is FCA (Seller's premises).

So if Ex works means that the buyer has to collect the goods from the seller's property, why should we be charged a set fee to collect the item?

Its a fiddle! they charge to check it over and tell you how it works. On the camper you pay delivery from the factory to the shop ( try getting it straight from the factory! and its oh no can't do that) Actually £99 seems cheap

Ex works is used for the weight of items when they left the place of manufacture, it can just about be applied to anytrhing. I think Jan is getting confused with Delivery and PDI.

I always thought ex works meant as it was when it left the manufacturer, but I've never really understood it so I could be wrong

Correct it does refer to any item as it left the place of manufacture  ie weight price or any other data they care to name.

It means they're making you pay their transport costs from the place of manufacture. It's the same as the "delivery" charge that garages make you pay on new cars.

Although I agree that the specification ex works means what you say this can't be what they mean by a £99 surcharge.

The £99 will be a delivery charge on top of the EX Works price, and if its only £99 I would not quible as many suppiers charge in excess of £200, and sometimes do noy even tell you. I think my father oonce got around this in 1962 when he collected his caravan from the works personally. I do not know if you are allowed to do this now, as there is a legal obligation for a gas test and serviceability check. In other words red tape so they can charge more and you can do nothing, which happens on cars and all sorts of other consumer items. I am afraid to say in this country some manufacturers think we are there to be milked of our hard earned cash.

Well thats my rant for this week over

Asked the question of one of the big dealers and got a reply....

"The Ex Works charge is the delivery charge from the Manufacturer to us, the Transportation cost. This is always the same cost regardless of make".

So when the dealer orders 20 Sunn-Camps (from Chelmsford), they are charged £1980... the same as when they order 20 Cabanon trailer tents from France... ;)

Yes I agree.....Just another way of milking us of our hard earned cash

Sorry to say I disagree with your dealer and this link will show you why, It clearly states an ex works wieght ie as it left the factory, and lower it also states that the dealer may charge a figure for delivery and PDI the Dealer charges you this not the manufacturer. It may be that the manufacturer does charge the dealer for delivery, but he is still passing on the charge to you. Also notice the cost of delivery and PDI on this item. He is say it is charged by the manufacturer to make it seem you have no choice in the matter but in fact he could drop it if you pushed hard enough, as he wants a sale.

If the dealers are making such vast profits on Trailertents why are there far fewer dealers now than at any previous time in the last 20 years. For example, every business Go Outdoors have bought that used to sell Trailertents no longer stock them, why? Because it's cheaper to stack dome tents high and flog them cheap.

Trailertents on the other hand soak up a lot more capital and storage space. They also require a lot more knowledge to sell and service. The dealers are getting increasingly frustrated making low margins and are turning there backs on the Trailer tent market.

As regards the delivery ex works charge, you should direct your comments to the manufacturers as they charge the dealers who in turn pass it onto Joe Public ! You are sadly misinformed if you think the dealers are making an extra butty out of the delivery charge. I'd be happy to simply build the price of the delivery into the total cost.

If you want to avoid ex works charges take a package tour or buy secondhand!

I think you'll find that buying a Trigano/Cabanon/Raclet from France and having to collect direct from the factory will cost you more than the £99.00 quoted. If you can do it for less let me know and I'll give you a contract to drive over to France 100 times at £98 per trip.. I'll then pass this onto the Public thus saving them all a £1.00

There will be an additional delivery charge of £199 on this item.

This charge is the delivery fee from the manufacturer to the dealership and must be listed separately for tax purposes under UK legislation from the package price.

This is what you pay extra on a trigano and the explanation why - does this help?
