I take it you've never owned one, or even really looked at one, then, Alan, judging by your mis-informed comments.
The modern Combis are not dark and dismal - you'd have to go back to late 70s for an all over brown one for that.
The basic unit can be either 4 berth or one massive 2 berth. An annexe can be put on the side to give another double berth, another can be put on the back if you need it, so it will accomodate a family of 8 or 9. You can also add an annexe or two to the awning if that's not enough.
The awning is a lot easier and quicker than a caravan awning to put up, but you can just use it as a canopy or as protection over the kitchen if you wish. They are expensive, but you get what you pay for and a well looked after Combi will last many years. Mine is a mid 80s model and still has years left in it. Also, compare the cost to other folding campers and they look positively frugal.
You can get a front box from the dealer, but they are pricey. I got a large plastic box from a local agricultural merchant for the front of mine.
In addition to the amount of stuff you can store inside the trailer, there is a large rack on the top which carries loads of gear.
