We picked up our TT last weekend and used it for the first time. All went well apart from one problem - the towing bracket is very low, so much so that it was reccomended that we remove the jockey wheel when towing as a precaution. We were also advised to get a drop plate and put it upside down to raise the towing ball by a couple of inches. After buying one I then looked at Towsure's website which sates that they MUST not be used in this way. The only thing I can think of now is to get a raised towball which they sell for ALKO stabilisers but wondered if anybody here has had a similar problem and what they did about it. Also, are the ALKO type towballs okay with a standard hitch?

As far as I know there is a standard height that a towball is supposed to be and so the first thing would be to check that your ball is at the correct height. I think the alko ball looks slightly higher but I doubt if it will make much difference. A drop plate is not supposed to be used upside down and could lead to all sorts of other problems.

No doubt somebody else will know more about ths subject but in the meantime I would remove the jockey wheel when towing if it looks likely that it will hit the road.

What are you towing with? Does it look particularly low at the rear?

Rob

It's a Skoda Octavia and it looks perfectly normal to me. I've used it to tow other trailers before with no problems but have recently fitted a bike rack between the towball and towbar. I wonder if that has had a detrimental effect on the whole system? (It was professionally fitted so should be fine!)

Sounds like it should be ok then. If you are using the bike rack and towing you'll have to watch the weight on the towball, the trailer could have a nose weight of 50kg so you may not have enough weight limit available to use the bike rack at the same time. If you have a workshop manual for the car it may give the dimensions to check the ride height. Might be worth looking at the caravan forum to see if anyone else has had the same problem with an Octavia.

If you have a look at the Trigano owners site you'll see the pictures of Tina's tow car.

Definitely on no account should a drop plate be used to raise the height of the towball.

Check the noseweight of the TT, plus the weight of the cycle carrier (& cycle if you are carrying it), doesn't exceed the max noseweight for the car.

I don't recall anyone mentioning a problem with Octavias before and a lot of caravanners use them.
