we are new to towing and just wanted to know do we need a snake bar or anything to stop it tipping or is it ok as long as we go steady any advice from all you nice people thankyou very much steve60
I don't know what car and what trailer you have and am not an expert.
We tow a Pennine Sterling (old one) with a 1998 Toyota Avensis estate and other than spinning wheels on a wet pitch have had no real problems with snaking. I guess if the car is heavy enough and you aren't speeding like a loon I would have thought you wouldn't have many problems.
Stabilisers are not essential on a well balanced and well loaded outfit. However, we always use one and ride at 76% of kerbweight and well balanced. Its a bit like having an airbag as well as a seatbelt and abs i spose - personal choice.
We have a VW Sharan and tow our tt fine without stabilizers. As long as you go within the speed limit, taking your time with braking etc, We have never had any problems.
We tow our dandy with a Zafira and have never had a stabiliser. We keep to the speed limit and apart from a bit of bounce on some of the terrible road surfaces we never had any trouble.
You could check out the Camping and Caravaning club website as they can be very helpful - they do towing courses.
Have just got back from my 1st hols with TT (Sunncamp 350 SE) and did not use any stabiliser snake bar and she towed like a dream. Like said earlier just keep to speed limits also. Was well chuffed with weekend towing.
