Hi, We're thinking of getting a pennine stirling folding camper. With two small children major considerations are
- how long does it take to set up? (really! - we've looked at the pennine website)
- how much useful storage have you got when all packed up?
- how susceptible to damp/water invasion are they?
- OK, its been a long time since I was 'under canvas' but do the sides leak if you touch them?!! (My mother is convinced we will be bathed in rainwater for the entire experience).

Honest answers welcome - and anything else we've not thought of welcome please.

right lets take your concerns one by one

how long does it take to set up? (really! - we've looked at the pennine website

setting up is like anything else practice makes for faster times , main unit first time maybe 30mins , will come down with practice ,awning is the same for caravan or camper

how much useful storage have you got when all packed up?

storage i have found over the years has been ample and have never thought i needed more

how susceptible to damp/water invasion are they?

in 10 years of owning these units can honestly say i have never had damp or known any one one with it

OK, its been a long time since I was 'under canvas' but do the sides leak if you touch them?!! (My mother is convinced we will be bathed in rainwater for the entire experience).

same again in ten years have never had water wick through the side can only say this how i have found it ,others might have different experiences , when you get a folding camper you will not want to go back to a caravan as you will have so much more room and two fixed double beds , i was looking to change my unit earlier this year ,but have found nothing in the Uk market that would come close to what i have got now, the only downside is having to dry the canvas out if you pack up wet , though this has never been a problem for me

considerations are

We can do the main unit in less than half an hour including water electric and beds.(If I don't keep talking to friends) The first time took us four hours just sorting the 11 pairs of surtains took an hour !
- how much useful storage have you got when all packed up?
We lweave everything from the tv to the microwave on board. Clothes and fresh food go in the car as ours is in storage and we just drive in hitch up and go.
- how susceptible to damp/water invasion are they?

Not as much as caravans as they all pack up under a protective cover when not in use.
- OK, its been a long time since I was 'under canvas' but do the sides leak if you touch them?!!
No the canvas is plastic backed in the imporatant areas (by beds behind settees) Its fine even in torrential rain.

(My mother is convinced we will be bathed in rainwater for the entire experience).

First time out this weekend with a pullman and it took us about 35 minutes to erect. This included hanging the inner tents and fitting all the curtains. Folding away took about 20 minutes which including fiddling things around to fit things into gaps. We haven't tried the awning yet.

On the storage front there is ample. In fact we have managed to fit the awning, the awning extension, all the poles, the satellite dish, it's tripod, two large folding chairs and numerous other things that we have previously carried in the car inside the camper body.

we are always amazed at how much our Sterling swallows up each and everytime we pack her down, infact we often think we must have forgotten to put something in!  One word of advise on packing though - do NOT put anything too heavy in the wardrobe!!  we started storing our awning in our wardrobe, until the sliding track snapped.

usually takes us around 20 mins to get the main unit up, then collect the water etc.

never had any sort of leakage through the canvas, and we have been out in some torrential rain!

hope that helps?

You can store light things in the wardrobe i.e. pillows, cushions etc
