When I was young, my parents had and Raclet Iris Delux tt (back in the early 80s). Now that I have a family, I am considering buying a second hand tt (max £400). My wife runs a shop and is often working at weekend, so I want something to pop onto the car to go away when the weather is good - just for weekends, half term etc. In the future we may consider a longer family holiday, see how the experience goes. My wife is dead set against caravans, however, tents are possibly acceptable.

Anyway - I want something cheap, large enough for 5, (kids 9, 6 and 4) must be possible to put up by Myself and 9 year old helping.  Seen a Conway Royal 320DL on ebay - bit higher than my budget at £600, but possible.

What do you more experienced campers out there think - anyone in a similar positon to me who can provide friendly advice

Thanks

Matt

If you are after something for short breaks have a look at a folding camper. You can pick up older, good condition 6 berths for your budget and they would be alot easier that a TT for week end breaks.

I would have to agree with Dawn & Dave.  I recently bought a very old but very good fc off Ebay for a lot less than your budget and you don't need to put up the awning when only going for a weekend.

Hi, We have got a 80's hard top folding camper, (conway laser 6)alot easy to erect than a trailer tent. We paid £650 for ours about 3 years ago. A great buy, we wouldnt be without it. Maddy

Thanks for the replies. I want a TT, I am sure that an FC would be nice - I just prefer the idea of a TT.

The Conway is in Sutton Coldfield - interesting as I looked at a Conway in Sutton Coldfield just yesterday (it was a different one) must be something about the local area

My old Conway Camargue cost me £200 (plus a slightly used Gelert Cadiz 5+2!) from a friend, though we've added a sun canopy (£125) and a new undertent (£50) to it. If you've got £500 as a budget(?) then you should be able to land a pretty reasonable early '90s one for that, though it's not really the best time to be looking as lots of other folk have the same idea at the moment. Best time to buy a TT is October!

I have to say though that most TTs don't just go up in an instant...they take about the same time to erect as a big tent, ie about an hour. Quicker for internal set-up time though because you've got beds and kitchen unit ready set up. We don't use ours for stays of less than a week  nowadays..we have a middling sized tent and lightweight kit for short stops.

Don't be tempted to but a TT without a kitchen btw...these are one of the great plus points of TT's, as they are big, stable and have tons of permenant storage space.

We bought a Jamet Louisiana for £460 back in October (I knew that out of season was best time to buy but didn't realise October was the magic month!!).  It's a 97/98 and in decent nick (after a bit of TLC and cleaning).  Great quality though and we're really happy with it.  I think £460 was about its money (??) - not sure we got a huge bargain or anything but so long as we didn't pay hugely over the odds I'm happy!  I've seen a lot go off on eBay and to be honest I would probably opt for one with a lot of extra kit included (gas bottles etc) - never underestimate how much it costs to buy all the little bits!

Go for a Dandy.  You'll get a cracker for < £600.  If you want a 5 bed, go for a Designer (older name for same model was Dandy 5)

Here is a real old one.  Should still have years to  run!
