Hello first post, I am looking to buy a roomy used folding camper,My budget is around £800, i like the idea of a winding up type for ease, without any pegging out etc (bad back) i have looked at many trailer tents but these seem to much like hard work & lots of canvas to peg out ! there are some hard top campers on ebay that would fit the bill, A conway Tardis on there looks good for the year. Has anyone had or has one like this ? if so are they any good ?...Any replies would be great full... thanks..Jeff

Pop up ones have a cable system to jack the roof up that can be problematic.  For that budget you'll be looking at a fairly old one so choose carefully.  Have a look at a Dandy.  PVC not canvas so will not rot.  No pegs (except awning if you use it).  Last for many years.  You'll find one in your budget with many years left.

Thanks for your reply ! But you may be a little biased ? or are you talking from experience ? The Conway guys rave about them, but like anything i suppose there pros & cons. I must comment on the dandy being a good idea using pvc, but i think  they lack a certain style IMHO.

They haven't been made for a while so you do need to be sure the roof bits are in good working order. However there is no more pegging on any of the folding campers if you choose not to use the awning the hard tops are no different in that respect. Newer pennine/conway have gas struts fitted to take the weight of the beds when opening. For £800 I would be looking for a pullman myself or a cruiser (if I'm right and that is the conway equivalent)

Bear in mind the hard top campers hav a much smaller awning than the canvas topped ones - hard top awning is only the width of the hard roof, whereas the canvas roofed units have an awning the full width of the camper, including the bed bits. ANd on a limited budget, you may be better off choosing the challenger type of unit as they seem to be a fair bit cheaper than the cruiser/crusader models. They are a bit smaller but may be in better shape for your £800 budget. Good luck in your search for the perfect camper and i hope you bag a bargain!

We have a pennine pullman which is lovely but does need 2 able bodied types to lift the beds up and over. Conway ones slide out which must be much easier.

I just bought a Dandy Discovery 1993 in good condition with origional awning £800 Alas no skirt, Got a shock when i checked the price of one. I am very happy with it. Get one with gas rams fitted and it's very easy for one person to erect. Ours is packed just hitch and go. I moved up from a tent couldn't go back. I wish I had come accros Dandy before, I would have bought one years ago.  The look put me off a bit at first. Stylish it isn't, But very practical, easy to tow, you can pack it wet, I wouldn't swap it now.

Not my own experience, but a freind who has one.  His cables have snapped twice.  Expensive repair both times.
