You use the elastic loop. Always. Peg directly though the D-ring and the canvas will rip apart in the first good wind. You need a little bit of give.
What's the D-ring for? well, when your elastic loop breaks or perishes with old age, what do you do? Unpick the seam to get at the fixing point for the elastic? Or do you take your new elastic loop, thread the doubled end through the D-ring then pass it back through itself to make a secure new pegging point in under one second?
Damm clever chaps, these tent designers.....
