My girlfriend and I dont live near any proper campsites but just 2 miles out of town are these empty lovely woods. Is there anything legal stopping us from pitching a tent and staying the night?
If you live in Scotland then it's legal to wild camp, subject to following the general guidelines about this. If you live in England you must have the permission of the landowner.
You could come un-stuck. In England, it is accepted that if you are in the "wild", by that I mean out in open countryside (not agricultural or managed woodland) you may well have a blind eye turned. If someone owns & maintains the land, then you will quite possibly be unwelcome. Police have powers to move people on, though they seem to have discretion when they use them. Is there public access? Can you legitimately get a vehicle there without driving a car over private land? Another offence there then. Put yourself in the position of the land owner/tennant. Someone turns up on your business premises or worse, in your garden, and pitches a trailer. You were not consulted. They have not asked permission. What would you do?

Sod that. I think we will just set up and hope nobody comes along.
who ever you are you have joined this site for the best advice and I am sure you will get the best members can give you,so please dont just say what you have (above) and take no heed from them,we are all campers and enjoy the outdoor life, but there are always some rules that we all must not break, other wise we would have the loverly country side distroyed,if you are going to do as you said and have a BBQ in the place you said please leave it as you found it,so others who visit that area can enjoy it also.
------------- Think this year is to follow old meet friends for 2014.
If you cant do someone a good turn, don`t do them a bad one,its nice to be nice you know, and little things mean much more later in life.
Pete.

This is a very, very naughty thing to do and both the landowner and the police can and will get pretty p*ssed off with you if you're caught. Why not just do the obvious and ask around the locality ie the nearest house, or even the postie? Make some sort of effort anyway. Just saying "Sod it" doesn't constitute a justification for breaking the law.
Other suggestion? Have a look through the Campsite search function above, find a nice local campsite and put down your money like everyone else. Most sites allow BBQs, and there will be toilets and showers as well.
