Tent value depends massively on whether it has been looked after. Many people here (including me) will have seen or owned tents which have seen 30 years out with no problems whatsoever.
The trouble is, it's difficult to tell just by looking at ebay photos what the condition is, and the minimum price is set by the person who may have been doing the abusing. There are a few pointers, though.
Look at the seam thread, not the canvas. If it has been up for years at a time the thread will have rotted and may have come unravelled a bit. If it's been stored outside, the cover may be knackered, or brand new.
I've seen 1992 Conways that I would be happy to pay over a grand for with no issues. I've also seen 3-yo tents I wouldn't pay £500 for. The issue apart from obvious damage (rips, damp, mice etc.) is sun damage.
Now, you can get a bargain on a 'demonstrator' model from some shops, but think about it. If its been up and sun damaged continuously for a year, how much camping does that correspond to? For some people, that's 20 years of camping!
I would always say if you want a brand new trailer tent, then buy one ex-works, and be the sort of person who wants to keep it for 30 years in really good nick, waterproofed every other year at least (I do it every year; the waterproofing also helps protect against UV damage), and under cover.
Otherwise, get a 5-yo model and keep it for 5 years. Unless it's a Sunncamp, you won't lose too much money.
