Hi we have just returned from a four night break with our two dogs, on of whom is about 10. He wasn't too bad this time, but does anyone have any tips for camping with older dogs so that he can enjoy it into a ripe old age? Thanks. He's a terrier by the way, and is allowed on the beds, but would not use the step to get into the camper :)
We camped with our Yorkie, Ellie, until she passed away last September and she wouldn't use the step despite running up and down the stairs at home (we think it was because the step had holes in it).
Are you experiencing problems because we didn't have any problems with her, she would take everything in her stride. We have just been away this weekend in our daughters TT and we took our new Yorkie for the first time, he loved every minute of being away.
Good Luck,
Mike
------------- Some people have nothing much to say, but you often have to listen for a while before you realise it!
We had to bolt a piece of plywood to our step to cover the holes before Maddy would use it. We stuck a bit of rubber mat on it to stop it being slippy.
------------- Good friends are hard to find, difficult to leave and impossible to forget.
Thanks for the replies everyone, he was fine but once or twice struggled to jump up on the bed. We have a bottom of the range trigano fc and there isn't much room to move around, we are at the mo looking at other campers that may give us all a bit more room! As he suffers from arthritis we give him a range of supplements but he does like his creature comforts and also sulks a bit when we take him. We thought about leaving him with my dad when we go but both dogs hate being parted and the collie loves camping,
My Rottweiler is the same and won't use the steps up into our caravan. No idea why, my Border Terriers both climb up the steps no problem.
I too give my Rottie Glucosamine with Condroitin and have just started using Cod Liver Oil tablets too. She also wears a magnetic collar. The combination seems to help her considerably.
Just a thought, can you perhaps make him a ramp (covered with rubber matting) to use to get up into your FC. Some dogs like them, others hate them but it might be worth a try.
My neighbour made a step for me for my old collie to get in and out of the TT as he won't use a caravan step either. The step is the width of the well of the trailer and about two feet deep. The platform is then carpeted. I think because it's so big he has confidence in using it. It packs away turned upside down in the trailer so takes up little room. He could never get up onto the beds themselves as his legs are too stiff but to be honest he has never wanted to. We take his thick bed with us and keep that in the corner of the awning and once he has decided to go to sleep for the evening, he gets into his bed and that's were he stays. We do have a SIG so he is not lying in any draft. The only down side is that because he is out in the awning, we don't zip up the cabin. On some nights we would love to zip the door shut to keep us warmer but we worry that he may need to come to us during the night.
Hi i have three dogs but i take my old 16 yrs young cocker spaniel barney away with us, he loves coming away, but he has tramadol from the vet for his joints and also meticam which is brilliant for his joints. when we go out at night i make a bed for him in the car as he feels more i secure! but dont be fooled due to histabs he walks two to three miles a day and is full of life! i suppose like the last reply said keeping them warm and also pain free is the best you can do.. also he is with you what more does a dog want he will be havng a lovley time im sure... a good tip if they have been in the sea running and with the cold night air.. get out the hairdryer or the electric blow heater!! snug as a bug in a rug!!
p.s the parrot comes too and she is just as spoilt!
