Mine has lived outside 90% of its 19 year life, seldom aired over the winter and has had no problems with damp or mildew. If your transit cover is in good condition and you put something like an upturned washing up bowl under the cover so that water doesn't pool on top then the water just sheds off.
A slightly more likely problem is mice. We had cats so I encouraged them to snoop around in the TT whenever I had it open but now the cats have gone I think I'll take the canvas off next year and put it and the mattresses in the attic. Having said that I've not had a problem with mice yet so....
