Just picked up our first trailer tent, a secondhand Raclet Iris and we have a couple of questions......
There is no groundsheet with it.The awning size is 3.15m x 3.9m.
What would you all suggest.
What is this breathable stuff like? It's the plastic stuff with holes in it. Do any creepy crawlies get through? What about if the ground is a bit wet or muddy when it is laid down, does the mud and damp creep through the holes. Do you end up with pools of water?
I have been to my local dealer, camping international, and they sell the stuff by the roll in different colours, but it's only 8ft wide....
Do I just buy 2 bits and overlap them or is there a way of joining them together?
Or is there somewhere that I can but a single larger piece?
The inside of the trailer on the floor is bare. What have people put in there as it'll be a little cold on bare feet.
Has anyone tried using a piece of the breathable grounsheet stuff, or that non slip matting stuff cut to size? Or are we better off with a piece of offcut carpet?
The breathable stuff is expensive & has all the faults you hint at. I hear of sites where they insist on it but have yet to find one. We use a platic weave tarp. Non breathable but waterproof. We have never left the grass yellow anywhere.
Steve,if its not breathable how does it not yellow the grass? We used to have both for our trailer tent.If its dry then use the breathable, its nice and warm to walk on and doesn't yellow the grass. If its wet and and soft underfoot put the Tarp down and the breathable on top.

What is the point of that? A breathable with a groundsheet is no longer breathable! We have gone a week in places & never left a dead patch. If really dry or for longer then action is needed, ie. roll 1/2 the sheet back on opposite ends for 1/2 a day. You do however illustrate my point - breathables are useless in the wet.
PS. we have vinyl flooring & a Turtle doormat inside the camper.
We use breathable and when it rains alot you get wet feet! But if you use waterproof over the breathable in just the areas you need to walk on it is easy to roll it up during the times you are not needing it to allow the grass to breathe. EG get a sheet to fit from the campers door to the exit, or for round your table or whatever, then your feet will stay dry. Then when you are out or asleep and not needing the sheet, roll it up and you still have breathable sheet - you will still get wet feet but at least your awning does not become a swamp hehehe
we have a normal groundsheet in the awning when it's wet nothing when its dry and use a rug in the trailer which is all so used for the baby to sit and play on.
Through your link we have ordered the breathable groundsheet, which they do in longer widths than the camping shops... and we have also picked up from Ebay a very thin tarpaulin sheet which we can plonk on top if it gets wet.
As for the inside of the trailer.... the local pound shop does "Tartan Picnic Rugs"..... Although (at 2ft x 3ft) they are only big enough for one person at a time to sit on !!!!
Two of these however do fit perfectly on the floor of the trailer with a little of that non slip matting stuff they sell in wilkinsons.
Glad you're sorted .I personally think its best to have both breathable and tarp,it keeps your options open depending on the weather and what the ground is like when you arrive on site.

Removable rug idea is excellent - when it is really wet/muddy (seems to be every time we go camping lol) you can store the rugs in the dry seat lockers. When tha rain stops, wipe the mud off the floor and get the rugs out. Job done!
