I have a Montana 6 and the front extension and in my opinion worth every penny it cost me, recently in the rain it was ideal for cooking under and leaving dirty boots/shoes under and no I didnt find it blocked any light from the front of the tent at all in fact when it was nice on an evening it kept the breeze out. Go for it buy one you wont regret it.
The Montana 6 is also a brilliant tent and can withstand some horrendous weather recently when other tents on a site I visited ended up in a skip following high winds the Monty was left standing and unscathed.
I also have the carpet and again this makes a real difference in the tent again glad we bought it.
